Owl Stranded in Open Water 70 Miles from Shore Finds ‘Nothing Short of a Miracle’ While Stuck at Sea

A barn owl, affectionately named Little Reg, was rescued from a precarious situation 70 miles off the UK coast by a team of British Army members competing in the RORC Round Britain and Ireland Race. This unusual tale of survival began when the owl, which typically prefers open landscapes like grasslands and farmland, ended up stranded at sea, likely after unintentionally roosting on a fishing vessel that departed from shore.

During the race, participants reported witnessing the bird struggling in the water several times before it unexpectedly landed on their boat. The Army Offshore Racing Team took it upon themselves to care for the emaciated creature, providing it with shelter and sustenance as they navigated their way around Ireland and Great Britain.

In an interview with the BBC, Mark Petherbridge, a member of the racing team, remarked on the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the owl’s arrival. “It’s been a tough 24 hours for him; it’s not the most comfortable boat to be on, but he’s doing well, and hopefully he gets the help he needs now,” Petherbridge shared. The team decided to name the owl Little Reg, celebrating its resilience and will to survive under such dire conditions.

The rescue was facilitated thanks to the efforts of James Stannard, a conservation officer with the Barn Owl Trust. Upon receiving news of the bird’s plight, Stannard coordinated the logistics necessary to ensure Little Reg would receive veterinary attention upon reaching land. He noted that, without the timely intervention of the racing team and the subsequent lifeboat that met them to transport the bird back, Little Reg might not have survived due to the lack of food on the boat.

Stannard speculated that the owl had accidentally boarded a fishing vessel when it roosted on a docked boat, unaware that it would soon be out at sea. He described the rescue as “nothing short of a miracle”, expressing gratitude that the owl managed to find safe haven amidst the ocean’s vastness.

Upon its safe return, Little Reg was transported to the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre in King’s Lynn, England, where it began receiving essential care. The centre provided updates via social media, revealing that the barn owl was in a critical but stable condition. “The owl is sadly very emaciated and weak, but is now receiving fluids, nutrition, warmth, and plenty of rest,” the centre stated in their post, highlighting their commitment to rehabilitating the bird.

As part of their efforts, the facility also called upon the public for support, requesting donations of supplies such as heavy-duty cat beds, crucial for providing comfort during Little Reg’s recovery process. The community has rallied around this heartwarming story, as animal lovers express their concern and hope for the owl’s rehabilitation.
