In a recent article for Vogue India authored by Baishali Chatterjee, Agarwal’s parents recounted the moment their lives changed forever. They were in Delhi when they received the shocking diagnosis. “We froze,” her father remarked, highlighting the paralysing effect of the news. Without delay, they rushed to Chicago to support their daughter, who faced an uncertain future.
Facing her condition with remarkable fortitude, Agarwal and Sriprakash opted to marry sooner than planned. In March 2023, they exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony led by Agarwal’s brother-in-law at her uncle’s home in Chicago. With the ink barely dry on their marriage certificate, Sriprakash took on the role of a part-time caregiver, an experience both challenging and, at times, heartwarming.
“In tough times, it is difficult to embrace the dual roles of husband and nurse,” Agarwal noted, lauding her husband for his grace under pressure. “While most might have walked away, Anirudh demonstrated that his love was unconditional.” She reflected on the significance of their vows, particularly the ‘in sickness and in health’ commitment, suggesting that not all couples truly understand this dimension until they face trials much earlier in their lives together.
After enduring two years of rigorous treatment, Agarwal received the joyous news that she was cancer-free. The couple was keen to honour their original wedding plans in Mysuru, India. Their dream was brought to life nearly three years after their initial wedding date, spanning 1,123 days of waiting, healing, and waiting still.
Celebrating their love with a three-day affair, the couple returned to Club Mahindra for a wedding that unveiled the couple’s journey. “It became an emotional necessity to honour our original dream,” Agarwal explained, reflecting on the significance of the event.
The festivities commenced with a traditional bridal mehendi, a ritual steeped in cultural significance, which was follows by a festive cocktail evening. Agarwal reminisced about how the atmosphere echoed their second date, adorned with shimmering lights that symbolised their journey together. To emphasise the magnitude of their celebration, event boards declared: “We have waited 1,123 days for this day, party accordingly.”
The second day marked the varapooje rite, where the groom’s family is ceremonially welcomed by the bride’s family, demonstrating the deep-rooted traditions that underpin Indian weddings. A joyful sangeet followed, showcasing the couple’s cultural heritage; for Agarwal, it was a tribute to her North Indian roots. The vibrant choreography and shared laughter allowed the couple and their loved ones to embrace the freedoms rediscovered after years of hardship.
In reflection, Agarwal noted that the duality of her two weddings—one civil and one traditional—held profound meaning. Looking at their wedding photographs, she recognised the weight of time and experiences that had elapsed. “When viewing our images side by side, the contrast holds the essence of our journey,” she said, emphasising how walking down the aisle with her father and witnessing their nieces and nephews grow over the years added layers of depth to their celebration.
