Woman, 35, Charged with Plotting ISIS-Inspired Attack on New York Capitol After FBI Sting

In Albany, a 35-year-old woman has been taken into custody following allegations of planning an Islamic State-inspired attack on the New York State Capitol. Jessica Bowie was arrested on August 19 after reportedly acquiring what she believed was an explosive device.

According to federal authorities, Bowie has been charged with providing support to a terrorist group. The charges stem from her purported conversations with a confidential source, wherein she expressed alignment with the ideologies of the Islamic State and articulated her desire to attack the Capitol, located less than two miles from her residence. The complaint was lodged in the U.S. District Court on August 20.

The indictment claims Bowie engaged in a month-long dialogue with an undercover operative posing as an ISIS facilitator, working in conjunction with the FBI. During these discussions, she allegedly highlighted her intentions to “harm the enemies of God” and sought guidance on how to fabricate explosives for her plans.

FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force apprehended Bowie while she was in the process of obtaining the explosive device. Reports indicate that since her conversion to Islam five years ago, she had been increasingly radicalised online, with the complaint detailing that she visited the Capitol multiple times from late July to early August. Surveillance teams allegedly documented her taking photographs of the area, reinforcing concerns about her intentions.

Bowie is purported to have made alarming statements regarding her goals, including a desire to “destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators while they are meeting.” In additional conversations with two other confidential sources, she reportedly discussed targeting the Capitol on a day when the maximum number of senators would be present.

Federal prosecutors allege that Bowie used various social media platforms to express her support for terrorism, with posts recorded between May and July. The Department of Justice alleges that she made notorious declarations, referring to intentions of poisoning individuals and contemplating fleeing to Syria after executing her planned attack. Furthermore, she expressed ambitions of targeting more significant landmarks, stating, “the White House with the president, but like, that’s an even harder job.”

In a concerning twist, during her conversations, she acknowledged that while the potential deaths of innocents, including Muslims, children, and pregnant women, would trouble her, she hoped for absolution from Allah.

The FBI’s National Security Branch confirmed that their ongoing investigation successfully disrupted an alleged attack plot aimed at elected officials at the Capitol. Operations Director Matt Fodor remarked on the efficiency of the FBI in detecting and thwarting terrorist threats before they can inflict harm on the public.

Bowie appeared in court on Thursday, charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation. The investigation continues, with the FBI working in collaboration with other law enforcement bodies, including the U.S. Secret Service, New York State Police, and Albany Police Department.

As inquiries develop, the FBI has yet to provide additional comments regarding the case. Community members and officials are left grappling with the implications of such alleged plots and the ongoing challenges posed by domestic terrorism.
