Family files lawsuit after 22-year-old dies from roller coaster ride

The family of a 22-year-old man is taking legal action against Six Flags Magic Mountain after he tragically passed away from a brain injury sustained while riding a roller coaster. Christopher Hawley, a recent graduate from San Diego State University, visited the theme park on June 23, 2022, with his younger brother and cousin. They decided to board the X2 roller coaster, described as an intense ride that jolted passengers around “like rag dolls,” as detailed in a complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2024.
The X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain is known for its exhilarating features, including 360-degree rotating seats and head-first, face-down drops from heights of up to 200 feet. During the ride, Christopher was seated alone in a row while his companions were behind him. After exiting the ride, he experienced severe discomfort, holding onto a handrail for support and later expressing that his head was hurting. Moments later, he collapsed, lost consciousness, and had to be rushed to a medical tent by park staff before being taken to the hospital.
Despite being in excellent health prior to visiting the theme park, Christopher tragically passed away the following day. The coroner’s report cited head trauma from a “park ride accident” as the cause of death. Subsequently, the family filed a lawsuit against Magic Mountain, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, and various individuals, alleging design defects, failure to warn, and negligence.
The lawsuit highlighted previous incidents involving injuries caused by the X2 roller coaster, including severe back, spine, neck, and head injuries, as well as traumatic brain injuries. The family argued that the safety warnings at the park were outdated and insufficient in informing visitors about potential risks associated with the ride. William Hawley, a family member, emphasised the importance of ensuring that such incidents do not happen to others in the future.
