Sandra Bullock recently opened up about her foray into social media during an appearance on the ‘SmartLess’ podcast. The actress, known for her performances in numerous blockbuster films, officially joined Instagram earlier this year. During her discussion with hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, Bullock revealed that her primary motivation for creating an account was to combat impersonators exploiting her identity online.

The Hollywood star explained that for the past year and a half, she had been plagued by scammers who used her name and likeness to deceive fans into sending them money. These fraudulent activities reached a distressing point where her own sister was approached by victims claiming Bullock had scammed them. “About a year and a half ago, I had to because there were people using my name and likeness to scam money out of people,” she explained. Bullock shared her concern for the victims, describing how families struggled to inform those affected that they had been duped.

Despite her initial resistance to joining social media, Bullock felt she had no choice but to act. “I had no intention of ever going on social media. It was never my calling,” she stated. However, she hoped that by establishing a presence online, the fraudulent activity would diminish. While it did reduce somewhat, she acknowledged that such scams remain a persistent issue.

The actress previously expressed her worries about the implications of these scammers on innocent people’s lives, as well as the safety of her family. In early 2025, the media reported on a case in France where a woman fell victim to a scam involving someone posing as actor Brad Pitt, who convinced her that he required funds for medical care. Furthermore, Reese Witherspoon has also alerted her followers about fake accounts imitating her online.
Since her first post on Instagram back in April, Bullock has shared a total of 14 updates. Her most recent post featured a collage of moments from her life, including time spent with family and work-related snapshots, specifically from her upcoming film, “Practical Magic 2.” This film, a long-awaited sequel to the 1998 classic, is set to hit cinemas on September 11.
In her conversation, Bullock also spoke about the enduring appeal of the original “Practical Magic.” The film has captured a new audience through social media, which she believes has played a pivotal role in reconnecting viewers with the movie. “For the audience to find it, we needed social media so they could find each other,” she said, noting that the film has transcended generations.
The actress described a phenomenon where children, now as young as ten, recount watching “Practical Magic” with their mothers and grandmothers, calling it their favourite movie. Bullock highlighted the rarity of such multigenerational appeal in films today, stating, “We don’t get a lot of multigenerational things like that.”
“Practical Magic 2,” which reunites Bullock and Nicole Kidman, includes an exciting cast featuring Joey King, Maisie Williams, Solly McLeod, and others. The film is highly anticipated and promises to capture the whimsical spirit of its predecessor.
As she embraces this new chapter on social media, Bullock remains steadfast in addressing the scams surrounding her image. Her journey from a reluctant social media participant to an advocate for transparency illustrates a growing challenge for many celebrities in the digital era.
With a substantial following of over six million since her account’s inception, Bullock represents a significant voice in combating online impersonation. As audiences await the arrival of “Practical Magic 2,” Bullock’s story serves as a reminder of the nuances and responsibilities that come with celebrity in the age of social media.
