A Florida wedding took an unexpected turn when a rare Key deer, affectionately named Rosy, crashed the nuptials of Estella Kirk and Gavin Guthrie. The couple exchanged vows on Wednesday, August 1, at Little Palm Island, a picturesque location in the Florida Keys. Approximately 25 close friends and family members helped the pair celebrate, but few could have anticipated the appearance of this uninvited guest.

Key deer are a federally endangered subspecies of white-tailed deer, residing exclusively in the lower Florida Keys. Little Palm Island refers to them as some of the “most cherished island residents,” known for their serene presence as they often emerge from nearby mangrove forests. Rosy’s curious nature led her directly into the wedding ceremony, lured by the aromatic floral decorations that adorned the venue.
Estella Kirk later recounted the moment to PEOPLE, explaining that the couple began to hear laughter halfway through their vows. It turned out that Rosy had made an appearance, feasting on the couple’s costly floral arrangements laid out just a few feet away from where they stood. “At first, we had no idea what was going on because we were so focused on each other and the ceremony,” Kirk noted, adding that once they realised what was happening, they couldn’t help but laugh along with their guests.
Despite the surprise, no one could deny the comic relief that Rosy’s antics provided. Kirk remarked that their guests were doing their best to concentrate on the proceedings while simultaneously watching the deer devour their expensive blooms. In a bid to coax Rosy into slowing down, Kirk’s grandfather gently tapped the deer, hoping to get her attention. “She was eating the flowers so fast!” Kirk shared, adding humour to the situation when she quipped that Rosy had decided to bypass the wedding ceremony and go straight for the “wedding dinner.”
Remarkably, Rosy went beyond just munching on flowers; she continued to hang out as the couple posed for photos on the beach. Kirk described how the deer grew comfortable with them to the point where they were able to pet her, creating even more cherished memories of their special day. “She ended up sticking around until our last picture, just as it started to rain!” Kirk said.
What could have simply been a quirky incident soon became a highlight of their wedding day. Reflecting on the experience, Kirk remarked, “We spent so much time planning every detail of our wedding day, but we definitely never could have planned for a deer named Rosy to become one of our unexpected wedding guests. Looking back, it made the day even more memorable.” The couple is pleased to have this amusing story as part of their wedding narrative.
