The Sacramento Zoo is set to launch an exciting new exhibit featuring three African giant pouched rats, engagingly termed “HeroRATs.” These remarkable rodents have been meticulously trained to assist in the detection of explosives and illegal wildlife products, playing a vital role in global conservation efforts. To commemorate the arrival of these unique animals, the zoo is hosting an inaugural celebration on August 20, designed to showcase the rats’ impressive skills while educating the public about the illegal wildlife trade.

The HeroRATs were trained through a collaboration with the Belgian non-profit organisation APOPO, which is renowned for using innovative training methods involving scent detection. According to the Sacramento Zoo, these rats are instrumental in identifying landmines, tracking tuberculosis infections, and locating various trafficked wildlife items, including pangolin scales and elephant ivory. This initiative underscores the zoo’s commitment to raising awareness of conservation issues and the illegal poaching activities threatening many species.


Zoo officials have crafted a dedicated interactive habitat to facilitate visitor engagement with the HeroRATs. This exhibit aims to educate the public on the broader implications of wildlife trafficking and the ongoing efforts to mitigate its impacts. Jonelle Mason, the zoo’s animal care supervisor, expressed excitement about the rats’ arrival and the significant conservation message they convey. The debut event will kick off at 9:30 AM, where zoo leadership and animal keepers will provide insights into the HeroRATs and their training. A live demonstration of one of the rats will follow at 10:15 AM in the in-house amphitheater, illustrating the rodents’ exceptional skills in scent detection. The demonstrations will eventually be part of a regular schedule, allowing zoo-goers to witness the HeroRATs navigating maze walls to identify hidden scents.
Unique to this species, the African giant pouched rats are solitary creatures, meaning that only one rat will be on public display at a time. This aspect of their behaviour allows the zoo to rotate the animals between the exhibition space and behind-the-scenes environments, ensuring that visitors get an up-close view of these remarkable creatures.
Entry to the debut party is included with general admission tickets to the zoo. To enhance the visitor experience, the first 500 guests reaching the HeroRAT habitat will receive a special limited-edition sticker commemorating the occasion. This initiative reflects the zoo’s aim not only to educate but also to engage the public in a fun and memorable way.
Native to sub-Saharan Africa, the African giant pouched rat is among the largest rat species, typically weighing between 2 to 3 pounds. One of the most striking features of these rodents is their extraordinary sense of smell, which significantly contributes to their effectiveness in detection work. In comparison to their domestic counterparts, HeroRATs enjoy a longer lifespan of approximately six to eight years, which further adds to their utility in conservation efforts.
Moreover, the weight of these rats is advantageous in landmine detection, as they are too light to trigger any explosives. Remarkably, one HeroRAT can inspect an area the size of a tennis court in about half an hour, proving them to be not only efficient but also safer alternatives to human detectors in potentially hazardous environments.
