A recent study has unveiled a notable rise in the number of adults exhibiting symptoms consistent with cannabis use disorder, a troubling trend that coincides with an increase in cannabis consumption across the United States. The study, published on 19 August in JAMA Psychiatry, examined the utilisation of cannabis among nearly 187,000 adults over a three-year period, from 2021 to 2024.

According to the findings, cannabis use among men rose from 22% in 2021 to 26% in 2024. Meanwhile, the percentage of women using the drug increased from 18% to 21% in the same time frame. Alarmingly, the research identified that 9% of men and 6% of women reported symptoms that align with cannabis use disorder in 2024. Yet, when accounting for broader symptoms commonly associated with cannabis use disorder, nearly 30% of users exhibited those signs, suggesting a more significant issue.
Cannabis use disorder is recognised as a mental health condition that arises from a problematic pattern of cannabis use, leading to considerable distress and impairment in various aspects of life. Symptoms can manifest in several ways, including persistent use of the drug despite adverse interpersonal effects, consuming larger quantities than intended, and facing challenges when attempting to reduce or cease use. Additionally, withdrawal symptoms can compel users to consume more cannabis.

Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and a co-author of the study, emphasised that the prevailing belief that cannabis is non-addictive may need to be revisited. “The notion that cannabis is not addictive may basically be incorrect,” she stated in an interview with The New York Times.

This increase in cannabis use and subsequent incidence of cannabis use disorder can be partially attributed to the growing legalisation of both medical and recreational cannabis in numerous states. The demand for diverse cannabis products has surged, particularly those with elevated levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound responsible for the drug’s euphoric effects.
Dr. Volkow articulated that the landscape of cannabis products available today is vastly different from that of previous generations. “It’s a completely different story,” she remarked. The increase in THC potency plays a crucial role in the addictiveness of these products, with higher concentrations correlating with a heightened risk of dependency.
Experts are expressing concern that changing market dynamics are contributing to this troubling pattern. Dr. Daniel Myran, an assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Ottawa, noted that the growing popularity of cannabis is accompanied by a shift in product composition, driven by consumer demand for more potent options. “This study highlights an anticipated consequence of rising levels of use and increasing potency of the product,” he commented.
As cannabis becomes more available and socially accepted, the implications for public health and safety are considerable. Understanding the psychological impact of higher THC strains and the potential for addiction is crucial for informing both users and policymakers.
