This particular incident originated during routine maintenance on an Airbus A380, which was undergoing checks on its air conditioning system after arriving in Sydney from Los Angeles on January 7. The maintenance worker, using the light for the job, inadvertently left it in the aircraft wing. Shortly after, the aircraft departed for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on the same day. It was not until two days later, on January 9, when the light was discovered after the plane returned to Sydney.
