Duane “Keefe D” Davis, aged 63, has been formally charged with one count of murder with a deadly weapon in connection with the infamous drive-by shooting of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996. Davis has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which carry significant weight due to the ongoing impact of Shakur’s death on both music and culture.
The trial commenced with a harrowing update as jurors were shown graphic autopsy images of Shakur’s injuries sustained during the fateful shooting on 7 September 1996. Dr. Lisa Gavin, a forensic pathologist from Clark County, detailed these injuries as she provided expert testimony regarding the circumstances surrounding Shakur’s death, which occurred six days after the shooting.
Gavin explained that her insights were based on the autopsy files of Shakur, which she reviewed due to the death of the original medical examiner who conducted the autopsy. The explicit photographs displayed the extent of Shakur’s injuries and illustrated the medical interventions attempted to save his life after he was shot.
As the courtroom witnesses were confronted with the distressing visuals, Shakur’s family members opted to leave the room to avoid seeing the graphic evidence. Among the images shown was one that highlighted Shakur’s iconic “THUG LIFE” tattoo, alongside a photograph depicting a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.
Dr. Gavin provided a detailed account of the injuries sustained by Shakur, noting that the bullet which entered his chest had travelled across his lung, ultimately leading to the collapse of the organ and significant internal bleeding. Prosecutors allege that Davis was involved in orchestrating the violent act as retribution for an earlier altercation between Shakur and Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Davis’s nephew. That fight had occurred just hours prior to the shooting at a Las Vegas casino, setting into motion the tragic events that led to Shakur’s death.
Describing Davis as the “on-ground, on-site commander,” prosecutors have characterized him as a key figure in planning the shooting. Despite the weight of the allegations against him, Davis’s defence team asserts that there is no substantial evidence linking him directly to the killing of Shakur.
The case has remained dormant for decades, lacking sufficient leads until Davis made controversial claims about his involvement. His revelations in a 2019 memoir, *Compton Street Legend*, included details about being a passenger in the vehicle from which the gunfire was unleashed and suggested that he had passed the firearm to Anderson, who he alleged fired the fatal shots. Anderson himself was killed in a separate incident in 1998.
Furthermore, the authenticity of Davis’s memoir is under scrutiny, as his lawyers contend that the narrative is largely fictional. Despite these arguments, District Court Judge Carli Kierny has permitted the book to be entered as evidence, which may impact the jury’s perception of Davis’s credibility.
As the trial unfolds, it is expected to last about a month, showcasing an extensive list of witnesses exceeding 200 individuals. Notably, Marion “Suge” Knight, a co-founder of Death Row Records who was present during the shooting incident, is anticipated to testify. Members of Shakur’s family may also take the stand, adding emotional weight to the proceedings.

The outcome could potentially bring closure not only to Shakur’s family and fans but also to a hip-hop community that has long awaited justice for the iconic artist’s untimely death.
