An investigation is currently underway regarding the circumstances surrounding the recent disappearance of 16-year-old Sophia Cover, who was reported missing from her Florida home last month. Fortunately, she was found safe and is now back with her family. Her father, Rick Cover, expressed to PEOPLE magazine that their primary aim is to return to a sense of normality following this traumatic event.

Sophia reportedly left her residence in Golden Gate Estates during the early hours of July 31. Surveillance footage from the area captured her as she departed, clad in a dark hoodie and carrying a backpack. After a week of uncertainty, police confirmed her safe recovery on August 10; however, they have not disclosed specific details regarding the events leading up to her disappearance, nor her condition upon being found.
Rick Cover, who has a large family and is a father of nine, shared that although he has a general understanding of what transpired, he is unable to provide further details while the investigation continues. The Cover family had voiced their disbelief that Sophia had run away, emphasising their strong bond and concern for her safety.
During the period of her disappearance, Rick and his girlfriend, Nana, devoted their time to searching for Sophia, logging up to 18 hours a day. Rick coordinated efforts with law enforcement, while Nana utilised social media to spread awareness about the case, including producing a heartfelt video series featuring family and friends appealing for Sophia’s safe return. One particularly touching moment came from Sophia’s great-grandmother, who expressed her love and longing for her granddaughter to come home.
Upon receiving the call from a detective confirming Sophia’s safe return, Rick described an emotional reaction, recalling how he broke down in tears upon hearing the words, “We got her.” Just a day later, he quickly travelled to New Jersey to bring Sophia back home, describing the feeling of their reunion as “amazing.” Their large blended family, filled with the excitement of the return, celebrated Sophia’s homecoming in a heartfelt manner.
Rick revealed that upon her return, Sophia surprised her younger siblings at their after-school pickup, creating a joyful moment for the whole family. They later celebrated this reunion by enjoying a swim in the pool, followed by a movie night. As the family settles back into life in Florida—a move made earlier this year to be closer to Sophia’s sister—Rick expressed a strong desire to help his daughter establish a routine and reintegrate into normal life.
To further support Sophia’s emotional recovery, Rick plans to arrange for therapy sessions as recommended by the Florida Department of Children and Families. He emphasised the importance of this step, noting the need to assist Sophia in adjusting to her recent experiences.
In the wake of their ordeal, Rick shared a statement from the family’s attorney, Brian Fritz, which praised the efforts of law enforcement, including the FBI and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The family is grateful for their dedication in locating Sophia and safely bringing her home.
Fritz’s statement also indicated that the family’s current focus is entirely on Sophia’s well-being as they await the outcome of the investigation. He requested privacy for the Cover family during this challenging time, stressing the importance of compassion and understanding as they work through the aftermath of the incident.
