Kevin Burns, who dedicated over twenty years to teaching U.S. history and civics at Jupiter Middle School, was reported missing on August 14. His body was subsequently located by a helicopter rescue team that was dispatched after a distress call was made by a fellow snorkelling companion.

The incident unfolded around 7:14 p.m. local time when Burns and a friend ventured approximately half a mile offshore on their paddleboards.
