Florida Nurse Sentenced for Stealing Fentanyl Painkillers from Patients and Replacing Them with Saline Solution

A nurse in Florida has recently been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for tampering with patients’ fentanyl pain medication by replacing them with saline solution. Emmanuel Valentin, aged 40 and residing in Miami, pleaded guilty to tampering with consumer products on December 13, 2024, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Florida. Court records obtained by PEOPLE show that Valentin received a 26-month prison sentence on March 17.
The misconduct occurred between July 10, 2023, and August 18, 2023, while Valentin was employed as a registered nurse at a Miami hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab. Prosecutors disclosed that Valentin used a syringe to extract medical-grade fentanyl and midazolam from patients’ vials for personal use. Subsequently, he refilled the vials with saline solution, fully aware that the substituted liquid would be administered to hospital patients for pain relief during procedures such as cardiac catheterization and stent placements.
Moreover, Valentin took empty vials from the biohazard waste disposal bin, filled them with saline, and used them to replace the stolen vials. Prosecutors highlighted the grave risk Valentin’s actions posed to patients, as they could have potentially contracted Hepatitis C and other blood-borne diseases. Following his actions, the hospital terminated Valentin’s employment and informed patients of the potential contamination. Patients were offered free blood testing, and fortunately, no acute infections were detected.
In a separate state prosecution on May 15, 2024, Valentin also admitted to stealing fentanyl from another hospital in the Miami area back in March 2023, according to prosecutors.
