A tragic incident in New Orleans has taken the life of a 17-year-old boy following a late-night exploration with friends in an abandoned high-rise building known as Plaza Tower. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) reported that the group, who were engaged in what is commonly referred to as “urban exploring,” entered the building around midnight on Friday, 14 August.

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the teenagers had accessed a stairwell on a higher floor of the Plaza Tower, which is situated in the Central Business District and is privately owned. This particular staircase lacked railings, leading to the fatal accident when one of the teens fell. The identity of the deceased has yet to be released, though it has been confirmed he was from Belle Chasse, Louisiana.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, 15 August, and were the first to reach the site. Kirkpatrick mentioned that a second teenager sustained injuries, specifically lacerations to his arms, and required immediate medical attention. This tragic event has raised significant concerns regarding safety in such abandoned properties.
Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, Michael Harrison, expressed deep sympathy over the loss and highlighted the dangers posed by entering boarded-up buildings. “This is truly a tragic incident,” he remarked. Harrison emphasised that it is unsafe for individuals, particularly young people, to explore such sites and called for heightened awareness in the community to prevent similar incidents.
Authorities confirmed they are in contact with the building’s owner to ensure that access to the Plaza Tower is more securely restricted in the future. The city officials are urging local youths to avoid exploring abandoned buildings, a message reiterated by both Harrison and Kirkpatrick. “It is very unsafe as we have seen,” Harrison stated during a press briefing.
In the wake of this tragedy, the issue of potential trespassing charges against the teenagers involved was raised. Superintendent Kirkpatrick noted that such decisions will need to be carefully considered once the immediate grieving period has passed. “This is a day of grieving,” she commented, reinforcing the idea that all individuals involved are suffering the loss together alongside the victim’s family.
