The investigation into Dillard’s death saw law enforcement using Flock cameras, a surveillance technology designed to provide real-time data, to trace Harper’s movements during the critical hours after the incident. This advanced method allowed investigators to establish that he had allegedly fled the scene of the crime. Harper was subsequently taken into custody approximately two and a half hours after the stabbing was reported.

Dillard was well-regarded in her community, having served as a teacher and the inaugural head coach for the girls’ basketball teams at two local high schools. Most recently, she was a recovery teacher and coached at Felton Grove High School in Apex, which had opened its doors in August 2022. Prior to that, she held the same role at Carrboro High School, making significant contributions to the development of girls’ basketball in the region.
