Lauren Fowler, who was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome — a condition that prevents the development of a uterus — has defied the odds and is expecting her first child. The 29-year-old, alongside her partner David, is celebrating this milestone following a groundbreaking womb transplant from her sister Kelly in May 2025.
Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome affects approximately 1 in 4,500 female births and leads to various reproductive complications, including the absence of a uterus. Lauren, who was diagnosed with this rare disorder, discovered a clinical trial for womb transplants in 2010. Initially, the study only utilised deceased donors, but when a subsequent announcement indicated the possibility of live donations, Lauren immediately reached out to her sister.
Kelly Fowler, who has three children of her own, readily agreed to the transplant, stating, “Absolutely,” as long as she could settle her family first. Their surgery took place last May, marking a significant breakthrough in Lauren’s journey towards motherhood.
Initially, the transplant appeared successful, and Lauren was discharged from the hospital after just a week. However, complications soon arose. “It was touch and go. It was a really hard time,” Lauren recounted in a recent episode of the talk show *This Morning*, which aired on August 17. Following the surgery, she underwent two additional procedures due to an obstruction but has since celebrated that her body has accepted the transplanted womb.
The sisters’ bond has deepened significantly through this experience. Kelly expressed her pride and excitement for the family’s upcoming expansion, noting how her children are looking forward to meeting their new cousin and sharing a unique connection through their mutual womb.
“Having gone through such a challenge has certainly brought us closer together,” Kelly remarked. Lauren also aims to use her experience to raise awareness about reproductive health and the possibilities that womb transplants hold for women like herself.
Since announcing her pregnancy, Lauren has been open about her journey on social media, sharing the realities of her experience, including the highs and lows. Following the transplant, she faced the challenge of her first period, which she described as “really heavy and draining”. Her subsequent period was so overwhelming that it led to her collapsing from exhaustion.
After a heart-wrenching miscarriage during her initial attempt to conceive, Lauren is slowly navigating the complexities of pregnancy. According to Womb Transplant UK, women who undergo this procedure can carry up to two pregnancies before the transplanted organ is removed.
When asked about future family plans, Lauren indicated that decisions regarding a second child would be made once her first baby arrives. “We will decide when we finally have this baby in our arms – I think that’s when your instincts as a parent will kick in,” she explained.
Lauren has expressed her determination and hope throughout her journey. In a heartfelt post on Instagram, she shared, “Every day. Every tiny step forward. It all counts. It’s building this story, piece by piece. Baby Funnell, I’ve been chasing motherhood for 20 long years, and I’m far from ready to throw in the towel.”
