Tragedy struck in County Kildare, Ireland, on Sunday, 16 August, when five teenage boys lost their lives in a horrific car crash on the M9 motorway. The young boys were travelling in a vehicle that was travelling the wrong way, resulting in a devastating head-on collision with another car carrying a family.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m., according to the Irish National Police (INP). The police reported that they were alerted to a vehicle moving southbound in the northbound lanes of the M9. The collision took place between junctions 3 and 4, leading to the immediate deaths of all five boys who were in the same vehicle.
Emergency services arrived at the scene to attend to those injured in the second car, which was struck in the collision. A 3-year-old boy, along with a female passenger in her twenties, sustained serious injuries. Additionally, two women in their thirties, who were the driver and front-seat passenger of the family vehicle, remain in a critical condition as per the latest updates from the INP. The injured family members are receiving treatment at local hospitals while post-mortem examinations for the deceased boys are being conducted at Naas General Hospital.
INP Commissioner Justin Kelly expressed his condolences, stating there was no police pursuit at the time of the tragic event. He emphasised the irresponsibility of driving in the wrong direction on the motorway, highlighting that such reckless behaviour is sometimes motivated by a desire to gain attention on social media. “This horrific incident shows how irresponsible and dangerous driving on the wrong side of the motorway is,” Kelly remarked.
He further condemned the actions that may lead to such tragedies, asserting that they can have severe consequences for innocent individuals. “What makes this reckless behaviour even more appalling is that in some cases it is being done for social media likes regardless of the potentially devastating impact it might have on innocent people and themselves,” he noted.
In light of the incident, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has initiated an investigation. Commissioner Kelly, while providing minimal details regarding the current proceedings, assured the public that the INP is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. “The INP are put in a really challenging situation dealing with such incidents,” he commented.
