Kelly Osbourne has stepped forward to defend her late father, Ozzy Osbourne, following comments made by Dee Snider, lead singer of Twisted Sister, regarding Ozzy’s songwriting contributions. This exchange reveals the ongoing discussions surrounding the credits in the music industry, particularly those involving iconic figures like the Black Sabbath frontman.

The situation began when a social media user highlighted a claim by bassist Bob Daisley, who alleged that he wrote a significant portion of the lyrics for Ozzy’s solo album “No Rest for the Wicked.” After being dismissed from the project, he purportedly was informed that his lyrics were no longer needed. Snider responded to this discussion on X, disputing the notion that Daisley was the sole contributor, stating that Ozzy frequently employed bass players to write lyrics. He reinforced his point by mentioning that Geezer Butler penned all of Black Sabbath’s lyrics, while also referencing Daisley’s contributions to Ozzy’s initial solo albums.

In his remarks, Snider went so far as to suggest that all the lyrics for certain projects were primarily the work of the musicians around Ozzy, including notable figures like Lemmy Kilmister. These comments drew Kelly’s ire, as she felt they undermined her father’s significant achievements in music.

Taking to Instagram to articulate her thoughts, Kelly stated, “My father’s legacy as a musician, songwriter, singer and bandleader speaks for itself.” She expressed confidence that those who knew her father and fans worldwide are fully aware of his contributions and the impact he made on the music scene. Kelly asserted that her father’s legacy would endure, irrespective of others’ opinions.
The 38-year-old media personality then aimed her remarks directly at Snider, questioning the validity of his critique. She highlighted the vast difference in their respective careers, remarking that Snider’s peak in the industry occurred over 40 years ago, highlighting her father’s continuous relevance and career that spanned nearly six decades.
In a further rebuke, Kelly accused Snider of attempting to diminish her father’s extraordinary legacy while he was no longer able to respond to such allegations. She argued that her father’s achievements required no validation from Snider, asserting, “My father doesn’t need Dee Snider’s approval to establish his place in music history.”
Despite her passionate defence, Snider later took to social media to clarify his stance, asserting that he harboured no animosity towards Ozzy. He expressed admiration for the Black Sabbath frontman and indicated that his comments were born out of a sensitivity to issues of credit and royalties within the music industry rather than an attack on Ozzy’s character.
Kelly, however, remained unmoved by Snider’s clarification, calling it a “backhanded compliment” while accusing him of opportunistically using her father’s name to gain attention. Her stern response indicated little patience for what she perceived as insincere attempts to engage with the public using her father’s legacy.
In a pointed conclusion, Kelly referenced Will Smith’s infamous line about keeping her father’s name out of conversation. She suggested that Snider was merely seeking relevance in a landscape that had moved on from his past successes, labelling him as a “bitter old man” grasping for attention.
Ozzy Osbourne passed away at the age of 76 after struggling with various health issues. His contributions to rock music remain indisputable, both through Black Sabbath and his successful solo career. Beyond music, he became a household name thanks to the reality television series “The Osbournes,” which introduced his family to a wider audience from 2002 to 2005.
This incident underscores the complexities surrounding authorship and acknowledgment in the music industry, as well as the strong emotional ties family members maintain to the legacies of their loved ones. Kelly Osbourne’s ardent defence of her father serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of artists like Ozzy Osbourne and the profound connection that family members feel in preserving their legacies.
