The girls shared with the fishermen that they had tried to signal a rescue helicopter that flew overhead multiple times but were unable to attract attention due to the sharp oyster shells surrounding them. It was a stroke of luck that the fishermen spotted them and were able to reach them in time.

After being rescued, the teenagers were found to be “a little cut up” and “real cold,” according to Pauling. However, despite their ordeal, they remained in good spirits. The girls were located approximately 14 miles Southeast of Cedar Key and were reunited with their family after being evaluated at a nearby hospital.

The Levy County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the successful rescue in a statement, expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various agencies and community volunteers. The rescue operation involved multiple agencies and volunteers who tirelessly searched for the missing girls before they were eventually found safe.

The teenagers had been reported missing the day before the rescue operation was launched, with the sheriff’s office coordinating search efforts alongside the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The girls were last seen paddling towards Cedar Key from Atsena Otie, prompting concerns for their safety.
