When Sara Koller from Vienna, Austria, discovered that her cherished Chihuahua, Nini, had cancer, she was faced with an overwhelming reality. While she could not change the course of Nini’s illness, she could decide how to spend their remaining time together. This inspired her to embark on a memorable adventure in Norway, creating treasured memories in light of Nini’s battle with B-cell lymphoma.
Nini, now 11 years old, has been a constant companion for Koller since she brought him home as a tiny puppy at just 18, sneaking him into classes during her last months of high school. Over the years, Nini has been by her side, embodying the role of a “Velcro pet,” always eager to be near her. In mid-March 2026, Nini started breathing heavily at night, prompting Koller to seek veterinary advice. He was initially diagnosed with a respiratory infection, but after worsening symptoms and significant weight loss, a visit to a specialised clinic led to a diagnosis of lymphoma. Koller recalls the rapid decline of her beloved pet, saying, “Two weeks before he was healthy; now he was very sick with cancer.” His treatment commenced the same day, and Koller began her journey into the world of canine chemotherapy.
The first two months of Nini’s chemotherapy were particularly tough. The effects of the treatment caused fatigue and stomach issues, leading Koller to seek out information and support. However, resources on how to navigate this journey as a pet owner were scarce, leaving her feeling somewhat isolated. Now, Nini is nearing the end of a challenging 19-week regimen of CHOP chemotherapy but, with the nature of lymphoma, Koller remains aware that the cancer will likely return.
Instead of succumbing to despair over Nini’s prognosis, Koller chose to focus on what remaining adventures they could share. She planned a summer trip to Norway, a destination filled with green fields and breathtaking fjords, where she hoped Nini could experience a new world. “I had never been, and I saw the greenery and the fjords and knew this was it!” she enthused.
Their travels took them to Herdla, where Nini enjoyed running free and discovering the landscape, alongside his canine best friend and Koller’s family. Reflecting on their trip, Koller described the mix of heartbreak and excitement in planning what may be one of their last major adventures together. Through it all, she has remained committed to positivity, inspired by her mother’s advice on Nini’s first day of treatment: “Don’t cry, he can see you are upset.”
Norway brought moments of joy and freedom, allowing Koller to witness a carefree side of Nini that had been missing during months of treatment and veterinary visits. She remarked, “I will forever remember him happy with his family,” underscoring the healing that comes from shared experiences. This unexpected outpouring of support has propelled Koller’s mission to alleviate the burden surrounding canine cancer, not only emotionally but also financially. As chemotherapy can be costly, she aims to create resources to support families who struggle to manage the expenses associated with treatment. “I want to make canine cancer feel less frightening and isolating for other pet owners,” she explained, emphasising the importance of community and shared experiences.
As Nini continues to teach Koller about resilience and the importance of responding positively to unfortunate circumstances, she remains dedicated to nurturing every moment with him. “I would have never thought that a dog with five pounds could be so strong,” she remarked.
