Joe Amabile, widely recognised from his appearance on ‘The Bachelor’ and affectionately known as “Grocery Store Joe,” has provided an update on his health following recent brain surgery. The 40-year-old reality television star shared his recovery journey with fans via Instagram, expressing his gratitude for the support he received during this challenging time.

Amabile underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour, which was identified as a low-grade astrocytoma. This type of tumour can lead to various symptoms including headaches, seizures, and changes in mood or behaviour, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. Following the procedure, Amabile indicated that he is on the mend and confident about his recovery.
In a video posted on Instagram, he stated, “I’m back. It’s been a full week since my surgery. Recovery has been really great, for the most part.” While he admitted to experiencing initial difficulties with speech and pain, he is now off narcotics like Oxycodone and relying on over-the-counter pain relief. “I take a few Tylenol here and there,” he mentioned.
Amabile shared that doctors have conveyed a “fairly good” prognosis. However, due to the nature of malignant brain tumours, he must engage in ongoing treatment to manage any remaining cancerous cells. This will entail a daily medication regimen aimed at preventing the growth of these cells. “So I will be going on treatment, which is just a pill every day for the rest of my life to put the bad cells to sleep. And hopefully they stay asleep,” he explained.
Expressing appreciation for his followers, Amabile acknowledged the outpouring of support he has received. He quipped in his caption, “If I haven’t got back to you it’s not because I didn’t see it, it’s because I don’t like you. Lol jk. I love you guys, I’ve just been very overwhelmed and focused on rest/recovery but the support means so much.”
The diagnosis of Amabile’s brain tumour came as a surprise after he underwent a full-body MRI scan with Prenuvo. On their podcast, ‘Not Married to This’, Amabile and his wife, Serena Pitt, spoke about their experiences, encouraging others to take charge of their health and advocate for themselves.
Amabile noted the importance of maintaining a positive mindset during his recovery. “I’m not one of those people like, ‘Oh it’s all about mindset.’ But I do believe going into this positive and with a positive mindset and keeping my stress levels low is the best thing I could do for my health in this current moment,” he stated. His wife echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of self-advocacy in health matters. “We hope that you guys take away from this to advocate for yourself, ask questions. You know, health is never something to mess around with,” Pitt advised.
The couple’s openness about their journey is aimed not only at helping themselves but also at encouraging others to prioritise their health. Amabile’s experience serves as a reminder of the significance of early detection and treatment in the face of serious health challenges.
