The recently released Netflix documentary, *A Child of My Own*, sheds light on the tragic and complex story of Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza, who spent over 13 years incarcerated after faking her pregnancy and kidnapping a newborn baby. Directed by Maite Alberdi, the film chronicles Mendoza’s journey, exploring the pressures she faced from her family and society, and the desperate decisions she made as a result.

Mendoza, who occasionally goes by the name “Ale,” felt an intense societal and familial push to become a mother soon after her marriage to Arturo Calderón Gamiño at the tender age of 17. She recalled in the documentary how the desire to have a child was linked to her need for acceptance within her husband’s family. “I always dreamed of being a mum,” Mendoza expressed. “Children have always drawn me in.” However, her dream soon turned into a nightmare after suffering three devastating miscarriages, leading her to a point of emotional turmoil that drove her to undertake extreme measures.

At the age of 25, after enduring the grief of losing her pregnancies, Mendoza sought medical solutions. Despite undergoing tests and attempting in vitro fertilisation, her subsequent miscarriage left her feeling hopeless and desperate to maintain a façade of pregnancy. To avoid further judgement from her in-laws, Mendoza kept her misfortunes a secret, convincing herself and those around her that all was well in her personal life.
It was during this tumultuous period that she encountered Mayra Navarro, a pregnant woman at the Hospital General de México. In a shocking twist, Mendoza alleged that Navarro was willing to let her take the baby after giving birth. Despite Navarro’s assertion that no such agreement ever existed, Mendoza claimed the two shared a verbal contract. This assertion is a major point of contention, with Navarro categorically denying having met Mendoza prior to giving birth and emphasising that she had only seen her as a social worker.
On 17 June 2009, the day of Navarro’s delivery, Mendoza’s plan took a dark turn. Claiming that she believed the child could become her own, she reportedly gained weight to sell her deception and altered her medical records, blurring the lines of reality in her mind. The gravity of her actions intensified when Navarro’s child, Katya Valentina, was taken from the hospital in a department store bag and handed over to Gamiño.
The chilling moment of their arrest came just hours later when police intervened. Mendoza and Gamiño were apprehended, prompting immediate outrage as it quickly became evident that a crime had been committed. The case left Gamiño devastated, as authorities initially considered him an accomplice, even though Mendoza maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal. He was later acquitted after serving over two years in prison.
Mendoza faced the consequences of her actions when she was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison for the unlawful kidnapping of a minor. Experts highlighted Mendoza’s psychological condition, suggesting that she may have suffered from a psychological pregnancy due to the immense external pressure to conceive. Such a psychological condition can manifest in women experiencing symptoms of pregnancy without actually being pregnant.
Following her release in 2022, Mendoza re-entered the world to find her relationship with Gamiño strained. Despite the upheaval, a shared goal of parenthood kept them connected. Gamiño had had a son with another partner during their time apart, yet the couple found their way back to each other and have since assumed the shared responsibility of raising Gamiño’s son together.
Today, Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza’s story serves as a stark reminder of the damaging effects that societal and familial pressures can have on mental health and decision-making. While the couple is striving to redefine their lives in the wake of their tumultuous past, the haunting account unfolds not just as a tale of crime, but as a deeper examination of the struggles faced by those grappling with personal trauma and societal expectations.
