A kitten, affectionately named Jersey, has captured the hearts of animal lovers after enduring a remarkable 800-mile journey from New Jersey to Georgia, hidden within the undercarriage of a vehicle for over 11 hours. The little survivor’s adventure began when a University of Georgia student, Jadyn Sawyer, returned to her campus in Athens, unaware that she had been transporting the cat alongside her.

According to reports, Sawyer discovered Jersey’s paw protruding from beneath her parked car shortly after arriving. Distressed, she shared the unexpected news with her mother in a phone call, stating, “There’s a cat in my car.” Her mother’s immediate reaction was to recommend rolling down the windows, to which Sawyer replied, “Not in that way, it’s IN my car.”
Believed to have climbed into the vehicle while it was parked in New Jersey, Jersey’s plight prompted Sawyer to contact campus police for assistance. However, rescuing the kitten proved to be more complicated than anticipated. Officers quickly realised they required expert help to extract the feline safely from its cramped hiding spot.
Kelly Bettinger from Cat Zip Alliance (CZA), an animal advocacy group, responded to the call for help. Her initial attempts to reach Jersey found him tightly wedged within the car’s undercarriage. Bettinger noted, “He was so jammed in up under the undercarriage. I still don’t know how he got where he was.” Despite their efforts to release the kitten, both the police and Bettinger faced challenges due to the cramped conditions.
To facilitate the rescue, Bettinger enlisted the assistance of the local repair shop, Tires Plus, located on College Station Road. The mechanics worked diligently, disassembling parts of the vehicle until they were finally able to reach Jersey. In a gesture of goodwill, the repair shop declined any payment for their efforts.
Chris Hinely, a staff member at Tires Plus, recounted that while it is not uncommon for cats to hide beneath cars, encountering one in such an inaccessible position is rare. He remarked, “You usually see it in cooler months when they’re looking for somewhere warm. But that little fella had a long ride.”
After their combined efforts, Jersey was safely rescued from his unexpected ordeal. With a newfound sense of comfort, the kitten is now thriving and will soon be available for adoption through Campus Cats/Cat Zip Alliance.
