A tragic accident at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon resulted in the death of a 20-year-old tourist on Monday, August 10. Zachary Nicholas Mertens, hailing from Burlington, Kentucky, lost his life after falling 177 feet from the top of the South Falls waterfall.
The unfortunate incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when Mertens entered a restricted area to take photographs. Witnesses reported that he slipped and fell, leading to a catastrophic outcome. According to a press release from the Oregon State Police, Mertens’s decision to access a prohibited zone proved fatal.
Efforts were made by other visitors to save Mertens, with one individual attempting to administer CPR while waiting for emergency services to arrive. Despite these attempts, the young man was pronounced dead at the scene.
