Former HGTV personalities Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson have turned to their social media followers for assistance in tackling what they claim is a fraudulent Facebook page. The couple alleges that the account is spreading distressing falsehoods about them, including a fabricated story about Sherrod having cancer.
The stars of “Married to Real Estate” shared their concerns in a recent Instagram post, outlining the adverse effects the fake account has allegedly had on their family. Sherrod enthusiastically addressed viewers, emphasising their long-standing message: “If you don’t hear it from us first, it didn’t happen. It’s not true.”
Sherrod explained that the fraudulent account, which goes by the name ‘Property Pioneers’, has not only misrepresented their lives but has also incited anxiety and confusion in their children. “I mean literally, my children asked me if I have cancer, because this story has traveled so far and wide, and it’s made up,” she said, expressing her distress over the situation.
In their joint plea, Jackson joined in, encouraging followers to remain vigilant about the information they consume. He advised audiences to be sceptical of posts that do not originate from their verified social media accounts. “Just pay attention to, not just to that page but anything, again, if it didn’t come from us,” he urged.
The couple highlighted that the fraudulent account was allegedly utilising AI technology to create posts that appeared credible. In a subsequent slide, they showcased examples of the misleading content, which included claims of Sherrod having brain cancer and remarks attributed to her regarding the LGBTQ+ community that she insists she never made.
Sherrod labelled the false account as “harmful and dangerous,” reiterating the importance of the truth. She pointed out that the account had blocked her after she attempted to comment on their posts, clarifying the fabrications to the public. “They know that we have asked them to take it down,” she stated, expressing frustration over the actions taken by the impersonators.
In her post’s caption, Sherrod reiterated her request for help, appealing for her followers to report the account. “If folks could just direct their energy and efforts for good… Help us family by going to Facebook and reporting this page and any others as fake and malicious. Thank you. I love you and there is nothing you can do about it,” she said, clearly moved by the situation.
Since the couple’s social media appeal, the status of the fraudulent account has changed. It now appears to either be deleted or set to private on Facebook, with the platform displaying a message that the content is currently unavailable. A statement from Facebook typically suggests that this occurs when the page owner restricts visibility or deletes the account altogether.
As of now, attempts to contact the fraudulent account for a response have been unsuccessful. Sherrod and Jackson’s efforts to combat misinformation serve as a reminder of the potential ramifications of social media misuse. The couple’s proactive response highlights the importance of authenticity and accountability in an age where misinformation can easily spread.
