In the video shared by B.D. Powell on August 8, he and his wife set out to investigate an allegation that Shake Shack prices increase depending on whether customers choose to tip. Powell noted that his wife believed customers who forgo tipping were penalised with higher menu prices. Determined to uncover the truth, the couple placed an order at the airport’s Shake Shack kiosk.

The couple ordered three classic shakes, including one that incurred an additional charge of 49 pence for whipped cream. The preliminary total before taxes and additional fees amounted to £18.46. However, after opting not to leave a tip, they were surprised to see a message appear on the kiosk indicating a “pricing update.”

In the video, Powell expressed disbelief as he reported, “Everything just went up 50 pence. Just making sure everybody knows. Do not go there.” This assertion led to widespread speculation online, with viewers questioning whether tipping was indeed tied to pricing.
Shake Shack has since responded to these claims, stating that the reported pricing issue does not reflect the chain’s official policies. A spokesperson for the company clarified, “It is not Shake Shack policy, nor that of our licensees, to increase the price of menu items when no tip is added.” The representative explained that the incident took place at a location operated by HMSHost, a licensed partner of Shake Shack.
According to the spokesperson, HMSHost conducted an investigation into the kiosk system and determined that the pricing change was due to a technical glitch unrelated to tipping practices. The company confirmed that the issue has since been resolved. “We’ll continue working with all our licensed partners to make sure every guest is taken care of at Shake Shack,” the spokesperson added.
While the pricing discrepancy has been clarified, the viral nature of the TikTok video has prompted further discussions about customer experiences and the transparency of fast-food pricing structures. Many viewers expressed surprise and concern over the potential consequences of not tipping.
The incident has raised awareness about tipping etiquette in fast-casual dining environments. As prices continue to rise across the board, diners are weighing the merits of tipping for fast food differently than they would in traditional sit-down restaurants.
Despite the clarification from Shake Shack, the episode serves as a reminder for customers to remain vigilant and informed about pricing policies in the food industry. It has also ignited discussions on social media about the fairness of tipping practices and how they can affect overall dining experiences for customers.
As the fast-food landscape evolves, incidents like this highlight the importance of clear communication between restaurants and their patrons. Shake Shack’s quick response to the situation exemplifies the need for businesses to address customer concerns effectively in an age where social media can rapidly amplify grievances.
In light of these developments, it seems imperative for consumers to educate themselves about the policies of the establishments they frequent. For Shake Shack, the focus now turns to ensuring a positive relationship with its customers, reinforcing their commitment to transparency and satisfaction in an increasingly competitive market.
