A lifeguard in Maine recently shared his harrowing experience of a close encounter with what he believes to be a great white shark. Greg Wilfert, who has spent years safeguarding beachgoers, found himself in a life-threatening situation while patrolling Pine Point Beach on Saturday, August 8. He recounted feeling a powerful force drag him under the water, an experience he described as completely unprecedented.

Wilfert, aged 71, was utilising a yellow rescue torpedo when he unexpectedly felt a strong pull that took him down to a depth of six feet. Initially, he thought he might be caught in the propeller of a boat. However, it soon became apparent that there were no boats in the vicinity. Realising he was likely in the grip of a shark, he managed to free himself from his harness and swim swiftly back to the surface.
“The amount of force that pulled me under, I’ve never felt anything like that,” Wilfert told News Center Maine. His instincts kicked in, and he swam with urgency back to the shore, a feat aided by adrenaline and sheer determination.
Witnesses reported seeing the lifeguard and the torpedo propel into the air as he made his frantic journey back to safety. “It was frightening; I am not going to deny that,” Wilfert admitted. In panicked shouts, he urged others in the water to make their way to the beach, unsure of the shark’s location and potential threat.
Miraculously, Wilfert emerged from the incident without physical harm. However, the Scarborough Police have since indicated that encounters like this are not uncommon in the area. The incident corresponds with other recent reports of shark activity in the vicinity, which had been noted just days prior when multiple young sharks were sighted off Pine Point Beach.
Authorities have issued warnings for beachgoers to exercise caution while swimming in these waters. “There’s no fish that’s going to do that,” Wilfert remarked, reflecting on the strength of the creature that had approached him. He expressed concern that the shark might return to investigate further.
In response to the disturbance, swimming in Scarborough Beach State Park was temporarily suspended for about an hour, allowing lifeguards and public safety officials to assess potential dangers and monitor the ocean. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of all beach visitors amid rising shark sightings.
Despite the unsettling encounter, the lifeguard’s experience has raised awareness of the importance of remaining vigilant in coastal waters, especially during peak shark season.
