Brad Pitt has recently revealed that he has returned to drinking alcohol after a seven-year period of sobriety. This announcement came during an interview with Esquire, where the 62-year-old actor candidly discussed his decision to consume alcohol in moderation. His journey toward sobriety began in 2016, following his highly publicised separation from ex-wife Angelina Jolie.

Pitt’s comments in the August 10 interview indicated that he now enjoys wine and drinks “in a more restrained manner.” He acknowledged that he had slipped back into drinking after previously committing to a sober lifestyle. “No, I got — I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon,” he remarked, laughing as he addressed the change in his lifestyle.

During the conversation, Esquire’s Ryan D’Agostino offered a glass of wine, which prompted Pitt to clarify his current drinking behaviour. He explained that he allows himself to indulge in alcohol but does not overindulge. “I got overconfident a couple of times, went, Yep, nope, not good for me,” Pitt acknowledged, indicating that he is mindful of his consumption.

The actor expressed that while he enjoys having a drink, he is careful to keep it professional and not to consume alcohol in large quantities. “I can have a few. But I can’t have a lot,” he noted, suggesting a balanced approach to his newfound moderation.
Pitt’s decision to pursue sobriety stemmed from his divorce from Jolie, with whom he shares six children. The split was reportedly triggered by an incident on a private plane, which underscored the challenges faced by the couple. Following the separation, Pitt sought help through a 12-step programme to address his alcohol use.
Throughout the years, the renowned actor has been open about his struggles with sobriety. In a 2017 interview with GQ, he stated that he couldn’t recall a day since college without using substances like alcohol or cannabis. At that time, he was six months sober and expressed relief at regaining emotional clarity, saying, “I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again.”
In 2019, during a discussion with The New York Times, Pitt referred to his experiences in the 12-step programme and highlighted the importance of sharing one’s vulnerabilities in a judgement-free environment. He described it as a liberating experience, appreciating the support he received from fellow participants.
Pitt has credited friends, particularly actor Bradley Cooper, for their support during his sobriety journey. In his acceptance speech at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala, Pitt expressed gratitude to Cooper, saying, “I got sober because of this guy and every day has been happier ever since.”
As the actor navigates this new phase in his life, his willingness to discuss sobriety and moderation resonates with many who face similar challenges. The entertainment industry often places immense pressure on individuals, and Pitt’s openness may offer hope and insight for others striving for balance in their lives.
For anyone struggling with addiction or related issues, it remains critical to seek help. Resources such as the SAMHSA helpline provide support for those in need. As Brad Pitt continues his journey with honesty, he exemplifies the complexities of facing personal battles while living in the public eye.
