Eagles guitarist Steuart Smith, known for his contributions to hit songs like “Hotel California” and “Lyin’ Eyes,” has made the difficult decision to retire from the iconic rock band following a Parkinsonism diagnosis. The 72-year-old musician shared in a statement with PEOPLE that he will be stepping down from his role within the band, expressing regret but acknowledging the necessity of prioritising his health and well-being.

Smith revealed, “It is with profound regret that, due to performance issues associated with my recently diagnosed Parkinsonism, I find that I must bow out of my role with the Eagles while I can still do so gracefully.” He expressed gratitude for his time with the band, spanning a quarter of a century, and his initial hopes of finishing out the year with them. However, he recognised the importance of doing what is best for everyone involved.
Parkinsonism is characterised by a set of movement symptoms commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease and other related disorders. These symptoms can include slow movements, stiffness, walking and balance difficulties, and tremors, impacting one’s ability to perform tasks requiring physical dexterity effectively.
Founding member of The Eagles, Don Henley, also acknowledged Smith’s retirement, praising his exceptional talents and the unique contributions he brought to the band’s recordings and live performances. Henley further mentioned that although Smith will be greatly missed, he will always remain a cherished part of the Eagles’ musical family, with fans worldwide wishing him well in this new chapter of his life.
Smith’s musical career was not limited to The Eagles, as he has also collaborated with various artists such as Rosanne Cash, Shawn Colvin, Rodney Crowell, and Wynonna Judd. Joining the band in 2001, he took on the role of lead guitarist, following the departure of former member Don Felder. Throughout his tenure, Smith became known for his skilled performances with a twin-necked guitar and his contributions to songwriting on the band’s 2007 album, “Long Road Out of Eden.”
As The Eagles embarked on their farewell tour, The Long Goodbye, in 2023, which included a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, Smith’s absence during a portion of their performances was noted. Session guitarist Chris Holt stepped in for Smith during the band’s residency, ensuring the continuation of the Eagles’ legendary sound and performances. The Eagles, formed in 1972, have seen various lineup changes over the years, with current members including Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill, and Deacon Frey alongside Henley.
Despite his retirement from touring with The Eagles, Steuart Smith’s musical legacy and contributions to the band will forever be remembered and cherished. Fans and peers alike have expressed their support and well wishes for Smith as he transitions into this new chapter of his life. The impact of his talent and artistry will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the music industry for years to come.
