The author noted, “I don’t have to do anything to make my readers love Nantucket because when they get here, they will see it’s just like the book.”
EDGE Escapes, founded in 2020 by Juliana Fraioli Wilson, has made a name for itself as a unique membership-only service that marries the worlds of travel and literature. Initially conceived as an online community where readers could connect with authors and engage in thoughtful discussions, the venture transitioned to real-life literary retreats following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
“EDGE Escapes is about creating what I would call once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” Wilson explained. “It’s not just a book signing or a quick photo opportunity; we aim to connect readers with the immersive worlds of these authors.” This philosophy marked the approach taken during the recent trip to Nantucket, designed around Hilderbrand’s celebrated stories.
Participants kicked off the day at the 76 Main Ink Press Hotel, a charming boutique inn devoted to celebrating Nantucket’s artistic heritage. Over cocktails and light refreshments, attendees mingled with fellow book lovers, forging connections before embarking on a journey across the island.
The adventure continued with a two-hour guided tour led by Hilderbrand’s sister, Heather Thorpe. Thorpe’s ‘Blue Book’ tour offered guests an insightful perspective on Nantucket through the lens of Hilderbrand’s novels. The itinerary included stops at significant locations such as The Nantucket Hotel, an inspiration for *The Hotel Nantucket*, and Jetties Beach, where a pivotal scene from *Swan Song* unfolds. Guests also got a chance to sip prosecco at the Chicken Box, a local bar frequented by Hilderbrand.
Beyond visiting famous landmarks, the tour also delved into personal anecdotes about Hilderbrand’s life on the island.
