The American Kennel Club (AKC) recently unveiled its annual list of the most popular dog breeds in the USA, and contrary to expectations, the Labrador retriever has been dethroned from its long-standing reign at the top spot. In a surprising turn of events, the French bulldog has emerged as the AKC’s favourite breed for the third consecutive year.

Based on the number of dog registrations with the AKC, the French bulldog has demonstrated unwavering popularity, overshadowing the Labrador retriever’s 31-year dominance. The AKC’s Executive Secretary, Gina DiNardo, expressed no signs of the French bulldog’s popularity waning, attributing its appeal to being “fabulous companions for a variety of people.”
While the Labrador retriever claimed the second spot on the 2024 popular breeds list, the golden retriever followed in third place. The German shepherd and poodle secured the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Notably, the bulldog made a significant jump, ascending two places from the previous year to claim the seventh spot, causing the beagle and rottweiler breeds to slide to eighth and ninth, respectively. The German shorthaired pointer maintained its place in the top 10.
Although the top 10 rankings saw limited alterations from the previous year, the AKC highlighted the notable surge in popularity of the Cane Corso breed. Originating from Italy, the Cane Corso has been steadily climbing the popularity charts since its recognition in 2010. Its registrations have surged by a remarkable 414% in the past decade, propelling it from 47th place in 2014 to 14th in 2024.
Gina DiNardo emphasised the distinct characteristics of the Cane Corso, labelling them as “majestic and intensely loyal,” while underscoring the importance of thorough research and responsible breeding practices when selecting a canine companion. Noteworthy mentions among the breeds that have witnessed escalating popularity include the Boykin Spaniel and Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, marking significant advancements in their rankings over the years.
Furthermore, incremental increases in rankings were observed for breeds such as the Staffordshire bull terrier, Chinese crested, American Eskimo dog, Bracco Italiano, and German pinscher.
