Renowned rapper Tyga, known for his significant contributions to the hip-hop genre over more than 15 years, is embarking on a fresh journey as he introduces his new persona, $TARFACE. This bold alter ego allows Tyga to delve into a realm of synth-pop and narrative-driven music inspired by the vibrant culture of the 1980s.
In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Tyga, whose real name is Michael Ray Stevenson, explained that $TARFACE represents a departure from his familiar sound and established expectations as an artist. He views this project as an opportunity to explore creative avenues without being confined by his past work. “There’s no rules anymore,” he stated, emphasising the importance of risk-taking in creative pursuits. Believing that artists should not restrict themselves, Tyga plans to showcase his vision through music videos and intimate performances in both New York and Los Angeles.
The forthcoming $TARFACE album, which is set to be released on 31 July, draws heavily from the influence of Tyga’s late mother, Pasionaye Nicole Nguyen. She, he recalls, had a deep appreciation for ’80s music and films, fostering a shared connection that Tyga intends to honour through this project. “This was her era,” he shared, highlighting how their bond over the cultural aesthetics of the ’80s has inspired his latest work.
Initially, Tyga envisioned a different project, one that began with the creation of an ’80s-themed film titled “Baby, You’re a Star.” However, the story developed organically, leading him to the concept of the $TARFACE character. This persona not only represents a new musical direction for Tyga but also encapsulates an entirely independent artistic identity.
Unlike typical throwbacks that merely replicate the sounds of the past, Tyga’s approach to the $TARFACE album strives to evoke the essence of the 1980s while injecting contemporary flair. He explained, “I purposely didn’t want anything to sound like I just remade beats that were ’80s inspired. We made them now with a new sound.” To achieve this, he and his collaborators used vintage recording equipment, ensuring the production aligns with the warm tones characteristic of that era.
Tyga cites seminal albums such as Prince’s “Purple Rain” and Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall” as significant influences, alongside a constant loop of the film “Scarface” playing during sessions. He expressed a desire to embed a compelling narrative within his music, a marked contrast to modern trends where storytelling is often overlooked. “I wanted it to be a story,” Tyga remarked, emphasising the impact of narrative in music, and he aims to retell the love story of “Scarface” and Elvira in his own unique manner.

He aims to distance his new work from the familiar sounds associated with his previous releases, granting him the artistic freedom to experiment. Tyga articulated, “I wanted a full departure from the Tyga brand and my sound,” allowing the character of $TARFACE to flourish independently.
The transition undoubtedly comes with its challenges. Tyga is realistic about the mixed reactions that his new direction may elicit. “You can’t please everybody,” he reflected, yet he holds conviction that there are many listeners who will resonate with his revitalised artistic vision. This release will be distributed through his own record label, Last Kings Music, in partnership with EMPIRE, marking a significant milestone in his career.
In addition to music videos, Tyga has expressed plans to host pop-up performances that will solely feature $TARFACE material.
