The San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) shared the dramatic video of the rescue, which occurred at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28. The incident took place at Pappy’s Point, a well-known viewpoint within Sunset Cliffs, where many gather to enjoy stunning coastal vistas.

Reports indicate that the injured individual had been climbing the cliff face before he fell and struck the jagged rocks below. In a commendable act of bravery, an off-duty U.S. Coast Guard member witnessed the fall and rushed to the water’s edge. He entered the ocean to keep the injured man afloat while awaiting assistance from lifeguards and a rescue boat.

In the footage captured by the SDFD, rescue crews can be seen mobilising swiftly to extricate the man from the water. Employing a cable-haul system, they lowered a Stokes basket into the ocean, alongside a firefighter who was also lowered by a pulley connected to a fire truck. The scene depicted other lifeguards surrounding the man, who was lying on a floating stretcher, his arms raised in distress.
Onlookers gathered above the cliffs witnessed the unfolding rescue, with some visibly concerned for the man’s wellbeing. The rescue operation employed a lifeguard jet ski and a rescue boat to secure the waters around the scene, ensuring a safe environment for the operations to proceed.
The rescue was conducted under challenging circumstances as light conditions began to fade. San Diego lifeguards successfully transferred the critically injured man into the Stokes basket and lifted him from the water. Once safely ashore, he was quickly handed over to emergency medical personnel, who transported him to a medical facility for treatment of his traumatic injuries.
In an accompanying statement, SDFD underscored the seriousness of the situation, revealing that this was not an isolated incident. Just two days prior, on Sunday, July 26, another teenager experienced critical injuries at the same location. Fire officials took the opportunity to issue a stark warning regarding the risks associated with jumping off the cliffs.
“This serves as a crucial reminder that leaping from Sunset Cliffs is not just illegal; it poses significant dangers,” SDFD cautioned, urging the public to avoid such risky behaviours in order to prevent further accidents. The statement emphasised that the risks involved are simply not worth taking.
Sunset Cliffs is a popular destination, renowned for its picturesque views and opportunities to connect with nature. However, as these recent incidents highlight, the area can be perilous without proper awareness and caution. Visitors are reminded to enjoy the beauty of the site from safe vantage points and to respect the inherent dangers posed by the cliffs.
As the region continues to attract tourists and locals alike, it is critical for everyone to prioritise safety and adhere to local regulations. With the advent of summer and an increase in outdoor activities, it is imperative that individuals remain vigilant about their surroundings and the risks associated with adventurous endeavours, particularly in locations like Sunset Cliffs.
Local authorities and safety officials are collaborating to ensure that proper measures are in place to safeguard the public. Increased awareness campaigns may follow in light of the recent incidents, aimed at informing the community about safe practices while visiting this iconic coastal area.
