The circumstances surrounding his death have led to public scrutiny and speculation, particularly following the release of the emergency call made to the marine towing company Sea Tow. During this call, a young man reported that their boat was sinking due to a malfunctioning bilge pump. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Wells’ family, announced during a recent news conference that specialists in audio engineering will be assessing the entirety of the Sea Tow call recording. Crump emphasised their commitment to uncovering the truth behind the events that unfolded, stating, “We have the audio from the officials, and we have retained and are consulting with some of the foremost audio engineering experts.”
At the age of 18, Wells, who was set to celebrate his 19th birthday later in August, travelled to the island with friends but did not return with them. Friends have suggested he may have chosen to remain on the island to engage with a girl he had recently met. However, Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, expressed scepticism regarding this narrative, insisting that it was out of character for their son to isolate himself from the group.
The situation surrounding Wells’ disappearance has been complicated by concerns about his cellphone, which his mother later located through an app after he went missing. Friends indicated that he had left the device on the boat to protect it from water damage when the boat experienced its mechanical issues. Crump revealed findings from an independent autopsy that indicated the cause and manner of death as undetermined for the time being, with certain unusual signs, such as a red discoloration on the back of Wells’ head, prompting further examination.
Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., the forensic pathologist who performed the independent autopsy, noted that while some of Wells’ throat structures were missing, he assumed these had been retained for further evaluation by the pathologist responsible for the initial autopsy. Dr. Mitchell reported no fractures or significant injuries on Wells’ body, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigations.
During the same press conference, Wells’ parents reiterated their plea for individuals with information regarding their son’s death to step forward.
