Metal Detector Operator Does the Impossible After Finding One Man’s Lost Wedding Ring at the Bottom of a Lake

In a remarkable turn of events, a Louisiana man has been reunited with his lost wedding ring, thanks to the swift efforts of a local metal detectorist in Nova Scotia. Jeff Daglaris had resigned himself to the belief that his precious 14-carat gold ring was lost forever after it slipped from his finger during a kayaking excursion in June.

Daglaris was enjoying a day of adventure at Kejimkujik National Park, climbing rocks and jumping into the water with friends. In a moment of regret, he recalled thinking about securing his ring in a dry bag before entering the lake. “I was a little, honestly, disappointed in myself,” he revealed in an interview with CBC News.

After the ring disappeared into the depths of the murky waters, Daglaris and his friends attempted to retrieve it but quickly realised the futility of their efforts. Lacking proper diving equipment and surrounded by poor visibility, they decided to abandon their search. In a bid to locate the lost item, Daglaris tagged the site on his phone and took photographs to remember the exact location. It was then he turned to the internet for assistance.

This search led him to Nate McLagan, a local metal detectorist and weapons technician with the Royal Canadian Navy, who resides close to the area where Daglaris had lost his ring. With nearly two decades of experience in metal detecting, McLagan was familiar with the emotional weight attached to lost items, especially wedding rings. “I enjoy the moment when the item is returned the most,” he stated, recalling the joy it brings when reunited.

The following weekend, McLagan equipped himself with his metal detector, diving gear, and the photographs Daglaris had provided. Upon arrival at the designated spot, it took him merely two minutes to recover the ring, which was right where Daglaris had indicated. “And right as I was at the Halifax airport about to get on the plane, he sent me a picture with my ring,” Daglaris recalled, his initial despair transforming into elation.

Overjoyed at the unexpected success, McLagan described his own delight when he pulled the ring from the water. “He was like, ‘Oh my God,’” he remembered, reflecting on Daglaris’s astonishment at recovering the ring just before his departure. “It was incredible, the timing of it all,” added McLagan, noting the awe shared by those who witnessed the reunion.

McLagan, who only took up metal detecting three years ago, has already achieved notable success in recovering lost items, having found 13 in the past year alone. This year, he has set himself the ambitious target of reuniting 25 people with their lost belongings. His dedication to the cause sees him willing to travel considerable distances if individuals reach out for assistance. “If people tell me they’ve lost something on a beach that’s two-and-a-half hours away, I’ll make my way to that beach,” he explained.
