Elton John’s long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin has revealed that the iconic singer-songwriter continues to produce music despite significant challenges with his eyesight. In a recent discussion, Taupin disclosed that John, who is known for timeless hits such as “Your Song,” has adapted to a “completely different way” of writing since losing his vision.

John, now 79, became blind in his right eye after contracting an eye infection in 2024 and has since reported limited vision in his left eye. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Taupin shared insights into how John perseveres as a creative force, hinting at a forthcoming album. “He’s got a record coming out, I think, at the beginning of next year that I contributed to,” Taupin explained, without disclosing an exact release date.

The new project is a collaboration with producer Andrew Watt, and Taupin noted that John’s approach to songwriting has evolved due to his visual impairment. “He can’t read lyrics if they’re on the piano,” Taupin said. Instead of relying on traditional methods, John has taken to creating instrumental tracks and then engaging Taupin to write lyrics based on those foundations. “He threw basically three or four of them at me and said, ‘Can you do something with these?’” Taupin added.
The dynamic between the two musicians has shifted remarkably in light of John’s vision loss, yet it has not diminished their creative synergy. Taupin expressed excitement about the new music, which he described as part of a broader collaboration that includes contributions from other artists as well.
In addition to discussing his work with John, Taupin addressed the issue of their music rights. He confirmed that both he and John are currently uninterested in selling the rights to their extensive catalogue. “We don’t need the money,” he stated. “We both have offspring, and why don’t we leave it up to them?” This sentiment emphasises their desire to preserve their legacy for future generations.
Taupin’s own artistic journey continues alongside his collaboration with John. He recently announced his upcoming album titled “The Sea Has No Mercy,” which he described as a personal project reflecting on his life and experiences. This album is significant as it marks the first time Taupin has fully penned an album on his own.
He explained the personal nature of the songs, noting, “I couldn’t have made this album as a younger man. I couldn’t have written any of these songs. They’re all completely indicative of Bernie Taupin at 76 years old.” Each line, he said, carries meaning, drawing on his past and his present, weaving together a narrative that resonates deeply with him.
“The Sea Has No Mercy” is also inspired by Taupin’s memoir, “Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton, and Me,” which explores his life and long-standing partnership with John. The album, which has been produced by Frank Liddell, is described as a “late-life manifesto,” reinforcing the idea that Taupin’s wealth of life experiences has enriched his songwriting.
In tandem with his solo career, Taupin remains committed to collaborating with John on new projects, indicating that their partnership is alive and thriving despite the changes. Furthermore, a documentary based on Taupin’s life is in development, promising to shed light on his contributions to music apart from his work with John.
With a career that spanned several decades, Taupin continues to be a significant voice in the music industry, having previously released three solo albums, including his self-titled debut in 1971. His unwavering dedication to songwriting, whether alone or in partnership with Elton John, reflects both his passion for music and his adaptability in the face of life’s challenges. As he and John chart new creative territories, their collaboration remains a testament to the enduring power of their artistic bond.
