A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy tragically lost his life in the line of duty after his patrol vehicle split in half during a high-speed chase involving a stolen car. The deputy involved in the fatal incident has been identified as Hector Cuevas Jr., aged 36. The incident occurred on March 17 when Deputy Cuevas collided with another vehicle while pursuing a 22-year-old suspect driving a stolen car in California.

The suspect, identified as Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., was apprehended following the chase, while the driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, 23-year-old Marcelline Demyan, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department released a statement confirming the heartbreaking loss of Deputy Cuevas during the pursuit.
According to the police, the pursuit began when deputies from the Victorville Station spotted a stolen vehicle in Victorville. Despite attempts to pull over the suspect, Turner refused to comply, leading to a high-speed chase. Tragically, the chase resulted in the fatal collision that claimed the life of Deputy Cuevas, leaving behind his wife, two children, parents, and siblings.
Turner, who attempted to flee on foot following the collision, was eventually captured and taken into custody. Authorities have disclosed that Turner faces charges including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, evading a peace officer, and causing death or serious injury. Sheriff Shannon Dicus expressed his condolences for Deputy Cuevas’ family and emphasised his dedication to serving the community. He also highlighted Turner’s prior involvement in a police chase that led to another officer colliding with a member of the public.
The investigation into the tragic incident is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) to determine the precise cause of the collision. As details emerge, it has been reported that Marcelline Demyan, the driver of the other vehicle involved, described the moment of impact, noting that her car was struck after turning left at a traffic light. Demyan expressed deep sympathy for Deputy Cuevas’ family and mentioned sustaining injuries in the crash, including lacerations.
The community and law enforcement fraternity have been left reeling from the loss of Deputy Cuevas, a dedicated law enforcement officer with a six-year tenure in the field. Governor Gavin Newsom extended his condolences to Cuevas’ family, describing his commitment to protecting and serving the community as remarkable. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily in the line of duty.
The impact of Deputy Cuevas’ untimely death has reverberated throughout the law enforcement community, with an outpouring of support and condolences offered to his family, friends, and colleagues. As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision continues, the community mourns the loss of a brave officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community.
