A heartfelt vow renewal ceremony recently took place for Beckie and David Roach, a couple from Louisiana who have been married for nearly six decades. Their grandson, Philip Winham, orchestrated the surprise event to celebrate the enduring love story that has profoundly influenced their family and community.

Philip, a 27-year-old portrait photographer from College Station, Texas, started planning the special occasion in April. He aimed to honour his grandparents’ nearly 60 years of marriage while also creating lasting memories. With the help of family members, Winham scheduled the ceremony for July at the First Baptist Church in Choudrant, Louisiana, where the couple first exchanged vows in November 1967.
While Beckie and David were aware that they would be renewing their vows, they were blissfully unaware of the specific locale until Winham unveiled the surprise. He expressed his motives for the celebration, stating, “I wanted to put on a vow renewal as a way to honour my grandparents, God’s faithfulness in their life, and the love and devotion they bring to our whole family.”

The couple’s love story dates back to their school days. Beckie and David’s relationship began in sixth grade when David moved to Choudrant, Louisiana. Their first date occurred in ninth grade at the cinema. They became entwined during their high school years, with David captaining the basketball team while Beckie cheered from the sidelines.
After graduating in 1966, both went on to Louisiana Tech University. As David received a draft notice for the Vietnam War, they made the decision to marry. Their wedded life commenced just as David faced potential deployment, but he was ultimately exempted due to prior injuries from high school sports. Together, they have since built a life enriched by faith, family and service. Beckie dedicated 33 years as a local elementary school teacher, while David transitioned from a machinist to a purchasing agent for a fabrication company.

Winham reflected on the lessons he learnt from his grandparents, who epitomised love and partnership in everyday life. He recalled seeing them start each day together on the porch, sharing coffee and prayers. However, he began to contemplate the ephemeral nature of time and the importance of creating cherished memories with his grandparents.
To ensure this event would be one they would treasure, Winham enlisted family members to help. His brother and sister-in-law secured rented chairs, while his mother assisted Beckie in preparing for the occasion. Winham thoughtfully acquired flowers from a local shop, with the special touch of having his grandmother arrange her own bouquet.
When the couple arrived at the church, they were met with the presence of close friends and family at their home, eagerly awaiting their return. Winham was overwhelmed as he witnessed the day unfold precisely as he had envisioned. “It was a day I will never forget. A memory that I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” he shared.
Emotions ran high during the ceremony, particularly when Beckie expressed her deep affection for David. “I will love you forever, and remember you loved me, and you cared for me, and you were faithful to me, and that’s a wonderful life,” she told him. Overwhelmed by the sentiment, Winham found himself in tears, moved by the moral example set by his grandparents.
Following the ceremony, a video of the event was shared on TikTok, quickly attracting the attention of millions. The family was astounded by the response, as messages flooded in from people praising the couple’s enduring love and relaying their own personal stories connected to Beckie and David.
Notably, the post allowed Philip to reconnect with a distant relative from Delaware who recognised David in the video, while former students of Beckie, some of whom are now adults, reached out to share their memories of her kindness during their early school days.
“This experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and witnessing the impact my grandmother has had on others has been an incredible journey,” Winham remarked. As the celebration came to a close, he shared his hopes that others would feel inspired to honour their beloved elders, just as he had done.
Reflecting on the meaningful ceremony, Beckie described it as “a wonderful lasting memory” that she and David will cherish. Philip noted that the enduring love and commitment demonstrated by his grandparents serves as a model for what a loving marriage should be. He wished for others to understand that a successful partnership is built upon unwavering devotion and shared goals, regardless of life’s challenges.
Ultimately, the vow renewal was more than a celebration of love; it reinforced the importance of family ties and lasting legacies. Philip Winham’s thoughtful gesture not only honoured his grandparents’ marriage but also illuminated the profound influence their union has had on future generations.
