5 Climbers Found Dead After ‘Deteriorating’ Weather Conditions Forced Group to Stray from Hiking Route

Tragedy has struck on Russia’s highest peak, Mount Elbrus, where five climbers lost their lives due to unpredictable weather conditions during an ascent. The tragic events unfolded over the weekend, drawing attention to the dangers faced by climbers in the region.

The identities of the victims have emerged, with local media indicating that they hailed from Zenica, a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among the deceased were a married couple and a female doctor, raising concerns among family and community members.

Bosnia’s Foreign Minister, Elmedin Konakovic, expressed his sorrow over the incident, describing it as a “major tragedy.” The climb on Mount Elbrus, reaching heights of 5,642 metres (18,510 feet), is widely known for sudden changes in weather, posing significant risks to climbers and mountaineers who tackle its challenging conditions.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry confirmed that the two surviving climbers were evacuated and transported for medical evaluation. Their current condition has not been publicly disclosed, although it is understood that they received immediate care after being rescued.
