In a remarkable journey of entrepreneurship, sisters Kristen and Kathryn Groom have successfully turned a quaint bed and breakfast in Ontario into a vibrant event space. The sisters purchased The Rose Manor in Welland in May 2022, despite lacking any prior experience in the hospitality industry. What began as a modest venture has now evolved into a multifaceted business, encompassing weddings, retreats, and other significant events.
Kristen, 37, acknowledges the steep learning curve they faced at the beginning. “We didn’t have any formal hospitality experience before, so there was a lot to overcome to feel comfortable and confident in this space,” she explained. The sisters had to adapt quickly, as each day presented unexpected challenges, such as vendor cancellations and guest issues. “Our days rarely go as planned, but we see that as part of the journey,” she added.

Initially, The Rose Manor served simply as a traditional B&B, but evolving market demands led the sisters to diversify their offerings. Over the years, they have expanded their portfolio, welcoming an increasing number of events, such as bridal showers, baby showers, and wellness retreats. “It’s now both our full-time jobs, whereas before it was more of a side hustle,” Kathryn, 28, explained. This shift has allowed them to take on more events and fully immerse themselves in the business.

Marketing strategies have also played a crucial role in their expansion. Kathryn’s background in social media management has proven invaluable, particularly on platforms like TikTok. “Going viral has completely transformed our business in ways we never imagined,” Kristen remarked. Their newfound visibility has attracted guests and couples from across the globe, transcending their previous reliance on local word-of-mouth referrals.
Kristen noted that nearly all wedding-related bookings now come from social media. “We often receive over 100 inquiries in a single day after a video goes viral,” she explained. This surge in attention has led to partnerships with national brands and opportunities for media coverage. However, diving into the world of wedding planning has brought its own set of challenges. The sisters have learned to introduce new policies, including one addressing the use of confetti at events, to maintain the integrity of their outdoor space.
Flexibility and adaptability have become key tenets of their operation. “We’ve continuously sought to meet our guests’ needs while maintaining the essence of a homely environment,” Kristen remarked. Their unique property enables them to offer an experience that feels both intimate and capable of accommodating larger events.
To cater to varying event sizes, the sisters have made significant investments in physical enhancements to the manor. This includes the creation of a ‘Glass Garden,’ an elopement space designed for intimate ceremonies, as well as a covered outdoor reception area for larger gatherings. Future plans include a “beauty glam room” dedicated to brides preparing for their big day.
Although their responsibilities can require up to 18-hour workdays, Kathryn described their role as a “lifestyle career” that blends home and work life seamlessly. “When we’re on, we’re on,” she stated, while also acknowledging the importance of taking time off. “We do our best to block out periods for rest and recharge.”
Both sisters find joy in their operations, attributing their success to a shared passion for hospitality. “It feels like hosting family—only on a larger scale,” Kathryn said. They complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing for a balanced and dynamic partnership.
Reflecting on their experiences, the sisters highlight the importance of building relationships with guests. For Kristen, the impact of their inn extends beyond financial success. “We love fostering relationships with our guests. When they return to celebrate anniversaries or share life updates, it’s incredibly rewarding,” she said, recalling a past bride who recently welcomed a baby.
As they continue to grow, the Groom sisters have embraced both the triumphs and challenges of their journey. Kathryn emphasised the significance of maintaining an open mindset, explaining, “Saying yes to new ideas can lead to unexpected opportunities, even if it means learning from mistakes along the way.”
Ultimately, their resilience and willingness to take risks have shaped their evolving story. “We’ve learned to jump in with both feet. Facing our fears and embracing challenges has opened new doors for growth,” Kristen concluded. As The Rose Manor continues to flourish, the sisters remain committed to creating unforgettable experiences for all who visit their cherished establishment.
