A tragic incident at a daycare centre in São Paulo, Brazil, resulted in the death of a one-year-old boy, Abdoulaye Dieng, who suffocated after becoming trapped between a mirror and a safety bar. The incident is under investigation, with allegations of negligence against the daycare staff who reportedly left the children unsupervised during a staff party.

On 22 July, Abdoulaye was placed in the playroom of the Luz do Brás daycare centre at approximately 7:30 a.m. by his father, Ibrahima Dieng. Two hours later, the family received a distressing call from the daycare informing them that their son was unwell and being taken to a hospital. According to family lawyer Erson de Oliveira, the parents had expected their child would be receiving immediate medical attention.
It has since emerged that the young boy had been left alone with other children while the staff attended the birthday celebration of the daycare’s director, an event which is believed to have lasted for several hours. Abdoulaye is thought to have struggled for around six minutes to free himself from the precarious position before staff members noticed his distress. When they located him, he was struggling to breathe and was taken to the Mooca Emergency Care Unit, where he was pronounced dead.
The family alleges that this tragic incident resulted from gross negligence by the daycare staff, who prioritized personal celebrations over the safety and supervision of the children in their care. “They simply abandoned them,” de Oliveira claimed, urging authorities to take definitive action against those responsible.
In light of the seriousness of the incident, the Civil Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Abdoulaye’s death, with the case being treated as manslaughter. So far, five employees, including the director and various staff members, have been questioned as part of the ongoing inquiry.
In addition to the police investigation, the Municipal Department of Education (MDE) is conducting an administrative review of the daycare centre’s operations. The department has stated that should any irregularities be identified, it would consider measures ranging from administrative penalties to the potential disqualification of the facility’s operational licence.
The grief-stricken family held Abdoulaye’s funeral on 24 July, with his father expressing profound sorrow over the loss of his son. Ibrahima, originally from Senegal, shared the emotional toll the tragedy has had on him and his wife, stating, “I cry, cry a lot. It’s so sad.” He emphasised the devastating impact on the boy’s mother, describing her state of despair in the wake of their son’s untimely death.
As the investigation continues and the community mourns, the tragedy has sparked a broader conversation about the importance of child safety and supervision in daycare facilities across the region. Many parents are calling for stricter regulations and oversight to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Neither the daycare centre, the Civil Police, nor the MDE have issued immediate comments regarding the ongoing investigations. The incident has drawn considerable media attention in Brazil, highlighting the need for accountability in childcare settings. As families seek answers, the hope remains that this tragedy can lead to improved safety measures to protect vulnerable children in similar environments.
