On what was meant to be one of the happiest days of her life, bride Auja Singh experienced an unexpected mishap that could have overshadowed her wedding. Waking up in her villa in Mallorca, Spain, just hours before exchanging vows with her fiancé Nikhi Singh, Auja discovered she was covered in swollen mosquito bites across her face and arms.

The couple had been forced to leave their villa doors open the previous night when their air conditioning unit malfunctioned, flooding their room. With temperatures soaring, they opted for a cooler night’s sleep with the doors ajar, inadvertently inviting a swarm of mosquitoes into their accommodation. Up until that point, her wedding celebrations had been blissful, but Auja’s morning took a dramatic turn as she realised the full extent of the bites.

“I remember looking in the mirror and thinking, ‘This has to be a joke,’” she recounted during an interview with PEOPLE. With the wedding celebration rapidly approaching, Auja was thrown into crisis mode as she sought ways to alleviate the swelling. “I took five allergy pills, slathered myself in Benadryl cream, and even iced them,” she recalled, desperate to find a solution.

Despite the fact that the bites drastically increased in size, resulting in an intensely itchy and uncomfortable situation, Auja was determined not to let it ruin her special day. “Postponing the ceremony never crossed my mind,” she said. “Marrying my husband mattered far more than worrying about how I looked in photographs,” although she admitted to feeling quite emotional while preparing for the event.

It’s not unusual for wedding days to be fraught with unexpected events. Auja even had a moment of panic while getting ready, breaking down in tears as the florist arrived downstairs, completely unaware of the turmoil she was experiencing. Thankfully, her supportive friends quickly stepped in to reassure her, insisting the bites were less noticeable than she feared. In a creative effort to help her, they even fashioned oversized sleeves from an extra veil in an attempt to conceal the bites on her arms.

Ultimately, Auja decided to embrace the day fully, opting for heavy foundation to cover the mosquito bites on her face and playfully warning her photographer about extra editing in post-production. “Once the ceremony began, all that panic just melted away,” she reflected, noting that nothing was going to affect her mood or the joy of marrying the love of her life.

Interestingly, when she later viewed her wedding photos, Auja was pleasantly surprised at how minimal the bites appeared. A few remained visible on her arms, but she chose to celebrate the story behind them rather than criticise herself for imperfections. “Instead of seeing flaws, I’m reminded of everything that made the day unforgettable,” she shared.

However, the mosquito bites were not the only curveball during the wedding week. From a flat tyre en route to the rehearsal dinner to one wedding guest’s flight being turned around midair, the sequence of challenges proved that the universe had other plans for Auja and Nikhi. One family member even misplaced her passport in an Uber right before the festivities, adding to the unexpected nature of the events.

Reflecting on all the surprises, Auja acknowledged that every wedding will encounter hurdles. “I think every single wedding has something that goes wrong,” she said. “Don’t stress too much about what could go awry; focus on what’s right, because at the end of the day you’re marrying the love of your life, and that’s what truly matters.”

In the end, Auja’s experience changed her perception of weddings entirely. The amusing tale of the mosquito bites has become one of her and Nikhi’s favourite stories to reminisce about, underscoring that a wedding isn’t about achieving perfection. “It’s not about the details, but about who is there with you and the love behind it,” she concluded. “Somehow all of it just made the whole week even more special and unforgettable.”
