Katie Crutchfield, the lead singer of indie rock band Waxahatchee, and her partner Kevin Morby have officially entered parenthood following the early arrival of their son. The couple had previously revealed their pregnancy in April, with Crutchfield sharing glimpses of her baby bump on social media while on tour.

In a heartfelt announcement made on 22nd July, Morby reported that their baby boy made his entrance into the world a fortnight ahead of schedule. Just hours after returning from a European tour, Morby was present for Crutchfield as she went into labour at their home. “I returned from my European tour just in time. For our little beautiful baby to kick the door in two weeks ahead of schedule,” Morby expressed, detailing the excitement surrounding their new arrival.
The baby was born on 21st July, although Morby chose not to disclose the child’s name. He recounted the tense moments leading up to the birth, indicating that he was acutely aware of the challenges of being away from a very pregnant Crutchfield as he toured. “The tour — as amazing as it was — was somewhat tense having to leave a very pregnant Katie at home,” he shared.
Morby described the anticipation both parents felt, noting that they were holding their breath in hopes that the little one would not arrive too early. He added, “I like to think that the little guy waited for me,” hinting at the bond he felt even before the birth. Originally due on 1st August, the couple find themselves with a little extra time to bond with their new baby, who ironically was expected to be a Leo but will now be a Cancer.
In light of his new responsibilities, Morby announced that he would be cancelling several upcoming performances, including a much-anticipated appearance at the Eaux Claires festival in Wisconsin, an event hosted by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. “I was looking forward to jamming with Justin and Aaron [Dessner], which was going to feel very full circle,” he expressed, conveying his regret but prioritising family over performance.
As Morby steps into fatherhood, he shared his newfound joy, stating, “For now, in terms of jamming, I’m going to be holding this little ball of magic while listening to Grouper — ‘Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping’ on repeat.” His heartfelt message highlighted the love and affection the couple already feels towards their son.
Crutchfield’s pregnancy announcement took place earlier this year when she shared a series of intimate photos on Instagram while touring with fellow musician MJ Lenderman.
