In Ohio, a father facing serious legal charges related to the welfare of his 16 children has requested a mental competency evaluation. Gary Siders II, aged 36, was arrested during a raid on June 30, when law enforcement discovered the children living in deplorable conditions within a single room in their home.

The attorney representing Siders filed a motion on July 24 to ascertain whether his client is mentally fit to stand trial. This motion cites concerns over Gary Siders II’s current mental state and requests a psychiatric examination as part of the evaluation. In doing so, attorney R. Lee Roberts highlighted the sensitive nature of the information linked to Siders’ mental health, seeking permission to file supporting documents under seal.
The troubling circumstances surrounding this case emerged when authorities reported finding Siders’ children in a room described as so unkempt that some appeared “almost like feral animals.” This unsettling discovery has led to 16 counts of child neglect being levelled against Siders, alongside accusations of public indecency.
On the day of his arrest, Siders and several family members were taken into custody, including his wife, Elizabeth, and his parents, Christina and Gary Siders Sr. The conditions in which the children were found have sparked a considerable outcry, with Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson stating that the children seemed to exhibit a “distant look in their eyes” indicative of the distress they were likely experiencing.
Furthermore, Gary Siders II is facing additional charges related to public indecency. Four misdemeanour counts have been filed against him, all relating to allegations of “recklessly” exposing his private parts, in violation of an Ohio legal code. These charges were formally brought forth on the same day as his arrest, as the local sheriff’s office had been granted the authority to serve a summons for these alleged offences.
While Siders was originally scheduled to appear in court for a hearing regarding the public indecency charges on July 23, it has since been postponed to August 13. He currently remains in custody at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail on a bond set at $300,000.
