A seaplane crash off the coast of Washington State has left multiple individuals injured, including one person in critical condition. The incident, involving a Kenmore Air seaplane, occurred on Thursday, July 23, at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time, shortly after the aircraft departed from Seattle en route to Roche Harbor.

The seaplane crashed in Shallow Bay on Sucia Island, around 45 minutes into the flight. Upon receiving reports of the crash from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Sector Puget Sound—approximately ten minutes after the incident—emergency services were dispatched to the scene, according to a spokesperson for Kenmore Air.
At the time of the incident, the plane was carrying 11 individuals, comprising 10 passengers and the pilot. Thankfully, all were accounted for following the crash. Four injured passengers were taken to local hospitals for treatment, and one of these individuals is reported to be in critical condition, as confirmed by San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter.
In a statement on social media, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office detailed the range of injuries sustained by those on board, which included head injuries, broken bones, and lacerations. There have been no reported fatalities as investigations are ongoing.
Video footage captured by local media depicted the seaplane approaching the water before impacting the rocky shoreline. Survivors managed to escape the aircraft before it ignited, emphasizing the immediate danger they faced. Following rescue operations, several patients were airlifted to hospitals in Friday Harbor, Skagit County, and Bellingham for specialised medical care.
The U.S. Navy responded to the scene, assisting local police and emergency responders, who arrived shortly after the incident was reported. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have both been informed and will participate in the ensuing investigation to determine the cause of the emergency landing.
In a press release issued the following day, Kenmore Air announced the cancellation of all scheduled flights for July 24. This decision was made as the airline prioritises support for those affected by the accident, including passengers, family members, and employees involved in the rescue efforts.
David Gudgel, CEO of Kenmore Air, expressed gratitude that all 11 individuals on board had been located and reiterated the company’s commitment to assisting both survivors and investigative authorities. “We extend our sincere thanks to the United States Coast Guard, local emergency responders, and everyone assisting in the response,” he stated, assuring the public that Kenmore Air would provide verified updates as more information becomes available.
