Fisherman Treads Water for 2 and a Half Hours with No Lifejacket Before Being Rescued by Another Boat

A fishing crew had a fortunate turn of events on July 18 when they rescued a man who had been treading water for over two hours without a life vest. The incident unfolded as the crew of the fishing boat Seal Junior was making their way back from a nine-day trip, responding to a distress call about a missing fisherman.

Joao DaSilva, one of the crew members, recounted the events that led to the miraculous rescue. He explained that they received a distress call around 12:15 PM from a fishing vessel known as the Western Edge, which informed the Coast Guard that one of its crew members was missing. “It was a call from God,” DaSilva expressed, attributing their decision to change course to a higher calling.

After sailing for approximately an hour in the direction of the distress signal, the crew heard cries for help. DaSilva’s crew mate, Phil, soon spotted something unusual bobbing in the water. “I turned forward and there’s the lime green shirt and this dude waving his hand and he’s bobbing in the water. I’m like, ‘That’s him! He’s right there! He’s alive!’ We just started crying,” DaSilva said, recalling the bittersweet moment they realised the fisherman was still conscious.

The unidentified fisherman had spent about two-and-a-half hours in the open water before being located by the Seal Junior crew. Upon realising their proximity to the man, the Seal Junior crew alerted the Coast Guard and took immediate action by throwing out a life ring and other flotation devices to help keep the man above water. A compelling image shared by the crew captured the moment, showcasing the fisherman clinging onto the life ring with a Coast Guard helicopter hovering above him.

Following the crew’s efforts, a rescue swimmer from the Coast Guard was deployed into the chilly waters to retrieve the stranded fisherman. Thankfully, the fisherman was secured and subsequently treated for hypothermia. DaSilva later expressed relief and gratitude, recounting how he saw the fisherman safe and back at the docks after the ordeal.

In light of this successful rescue, DaSilva reflected on the importance of their presence at the right place and time, particularly given recent harrowing incidents involving fishing crews in Massachusetts. Earlier this year, a tragic case involved a boat with seven individuals which went missing off the coast, amplifying the stakes surrounding maritime safety.

“It’s nice to pull somebody out of the water alive,” DaSilva commented, acknowledging the emotional weight of their mission. He emphasised the significance of their actions that day: “Saturday was just special. We were there for a reason, you know what I mean? And it wasn’t to catch fish on that last tow.”

As the fishermen’s community maintains its resilience against the perils of the sea, this heartening story serves as a reminder of the critical role that timely responses and a collective will to assist play in prevailing over danger. The actions of the Seal Junior crew not only illustrate the savagery of the ocean but also the unwavering spirit of those who risk their lives for one another.
