Jay Feely, a former NFL kicker and sports broadcaster, has emerged victorious in the Republican primary for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. He will face Democratic nominee Amish Shah, a physician and former state representative, in what is expected to be a closely contested election.

Feely, who played professional football from 1999 to 2015, secured the Republican nomination with significant support, including an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Trump’s backing highlights Feely’s political ambitions, as he seeks to take over the House seat previously held by Republican David Schweikert, who recently attempted to secure a gubernatorial position but was unsuccessful.
In a video endorsement recorded at the White House, Trump praised Feely, stating, “I’m asking you to vote for Jay Feely, a friend of mine and a great athlete.” The former president also noted Feely’s leadership skills, citing his role as team captain across three NFL teams.
Feely’s football career spanned six teams, including the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, and Miami Dolphins. He has since transitioned into broadcasting, serving as an NFL commentator for CBS Sports. Additionally, he maintains a friendship with Trump, occasionally playing golf together, as reported by several media outlets.
The 1st District, which includes the northern suburbs of Phoenix, poses an opportunity for the Democrats to reclaim ground in the upcoming election as they aim to retake control of the House from Speaker Mike Johnson. In the 2024 election, Trump’s margin of victory in the district was a narrow four percentage points, and Schweikert’s lead over Shah was similarly slim, at just under three points.
Feely expressed gratitude for Trump’s support at his victory celebration, stating, “I also have to thank President Trump. On the Democratic front, Shah emerged victorious from a competitive primary against former television journalist Marlene Galán-Woods, who had the backing of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Shah, who served in the Arizona state legislature from 2019 to 2024, is eager to secure endorsements as he prepares for the general election. He remarked with humour about Feely’s support, hoping he could also attract similar backing, stating, “I hope that I can get their endorsement over Jay Feely.”
Shah’s medical background includes notable achievements such as leading the New York Jets’ Airway Management Team. He is credited with improving emergency management protocols for the NFL and has presented his research at professional gatherings, including the NFL Physicians’ Society. His tenure with the Jets notably coincided with Feely’s time as the team’s placekicker from 2008 to 2009.
As both candidates prepare for the general election, the dynamics of their backgrounds—Feely’s athletic career and Shah’s medical expertise—are likely to shape their campaigns.
