Chadwick Boseman’s Brothers Explain Why They’re Suing the Late Actor’s Widow Over His Estate, Say They Seek ‘Clarity’

Chadwick Boseman’s brothers, Kevin and Derrick, have initiated legal proceedings against Taylor Simone Ledward, the late actor’s widow, amid ongoing disputes regarding the distribution of his estate. The petition was filed in a Los Angeles court on 17 July, with Derrick and Kevin expressing their hopes for clarity in the matter in a public statement issued on 23 July.

In their filing, the brothers allege that Ledward has failed to properly manage and distribute the assets of Chadwick’s estate, nearly four years after his death. They claim that their family was unaware of the ongoing delays, noting that the court had previously issued an order for final distribution on 4 October 2022, which they assert has not been fulfilled. “Our petition seeks enforcement of the Court’s Order and the relief requested in the filing,” the brothers stated.

Chadwick Boseman, known for his iconic role in “Black Panther,” passed away in August 2020 following a private battle with colon cancer at the age of 43. According to the petition, Ledward is entitled to 50% of Boseman’s estate, given that he died intestate—without a will—just six days after they had wed. Chadwick’s parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, are entitled to the remaining 25%. However, Kevin and Derrick allege that Ledward retains “unilateral control” over the estate, which they argue hinders the family’s ability to gain closure and participate in decisions affecting their interests.

The brothers’ lawsuit further claims that the estate encompasses more than just widely recognised assets, including royalties, intellectual property rights, and potentially undisclosed financial accounts. They assert that Ledward has not distributed a significant Life Long-Term Care Policy valued at £40,000, while several bank accounts remain open without clear accountability or reporting to the family.

“On behalf of our parents, we are committed to ensuring that transparency, accountability, and respect guide the resolution of these matters,” the Boseman family stated. “Our hope is that this process brings clarity, honours the Court’s orders, and ensures the responsible stewardship of Chadwick’s legacy.” They expressed their intentions to protect their parents’ interests while honouring their brother’s memory with dignity and integrity.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Boseman brothers have proposed appointing Jason Rubin, a professional fiduciary and forensic accountant, as the new administrator of Chadwick’s estate in place of Ledward. They emphasised their commitment to preserving their brother’s legacy and continuing the meaningful work of Boseman Family LLC.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Ledward’s attorneys have yet to comment publicly on the situation. The outcome of this dispute remains uncertain, as both sides prepare to navigate the complexities of estate administration.
