In a heartwarming story of love and resilience, nurse Nora Lussier has officially adopted her daughter, Pamela, whom she first met as a vulnerable infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Beverly Hospital. Lussier, who works in the special care nursery, felt an immediate bond with Pamela, who was born with a range of medical challenges after being exposed to drugs in utero.

Pamela’s journey began under difficult circumstances; her biological parents were unable to care for her, and she faced significant health issues, including the need for a feeding tube. When Lussier learned that Pamela’s original foster family was unable to take her in due to these medical complexities, she and her husband, Martin, felt a strong pull to step in.
“I was just sitting there with her and thinking, ‘Well, she is really cute,’” Lussier recalled in an interview. Encouraged by her colleagues, who urged her to take the leap and adopt, she and Martin quickly made the decision to fast-track Pamela’s placement into their home.
Initially, the couple had planned to become foster parents but were not expecting to start their journey so soon. After much thought, Martin was eventually won over. He stated, “Seeing her come home and smile and be happy and laugh, I knew it was the right call.” The couple was relieved when the state expedited the necessary processes, recognising Lussier’s previous connection to Pamela from her time in the NICU.
Reflecting on the moment they realised they would be parents, Lussier recalled a whirlwind of emotions. “I really do feel like I just blacked out and suddenly I had a kid,” she said, expressing the overwhelming feelings that came with this new responsibility.
On July 17, coincidentally Pamela’s second birthday, the couple officially adopted her, surrounded by 25 friends and family members, including some of Lussier’s fellow NICU nurses. It was a celebratory occasion marking a new chapter in their lives, one filled with love, hope, and a sense of purpose. Martin shared his appreciation, saying, “This has been an incredible undertaking, but I can’t think of a better person to do it with and a better person to do it for.”
Despite some developmental delays, Pamela has been making steady progress. Lussier and Martin describe their daughter as the perfect addition to their family, believing that the bond they share was meant to be. Nora added, “They say not to take work home with you, which I definitely did. Worked out well for me, too. We couldn’t have asked for a better kid.”
