Nolan Wells’ Family Releases Their Own Autopsy: No Severe Injuries Found but 7 Key Questions Remain

The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, a promising student-athlete who tragically vanished during a Fourth of July party on Horn Island, Mississippi, has called for further investigation following the release of an independent autopsy. Nolan disappeared from a gathering of friends on July 4, with his body being discovered two days later, prompting significant public concern and numerous questions surrounding the circumstances of his death.

At a press briefing held on 22 July, the family’s attorney, Ben Crump, revealed findings from the independent autopsy conducted by Dr. Roger J. Mitchell. The results indicate that while there were no signs of fractures or deep tissue injuries on Nolan’s body, the cause and manner of death remain unclear. The attorney emphasised that important questions still linger about whether foul play was involved in the teen’s demise.

Dr. Mitchell’s report acknowledged several limitations, primarily due to the state of decomposition of Wells’ body at the time of the second autopsy. He highlighted that decomposition may have impeded the ability to identify possible bruising or abrasions. Notably, he did identify “red discoloration in the soft tissue of the back of [Wells’] head,” which the family finds concerning, yet the cause of this discolouration remains unknown.

The autopsy faced additional constraints as Dr. Mitchell could not access Wells’ lungs or stomach for examination because the organs had already been removed during the official investigation, further complicating the understanding of any potential drowning circumstances. Despite these challenges, Mitchell outlined seven critical questions that remain unanswered, including how Wells ended up in the water, what position his body was found in, and whether any water was in his airway.

Attorney Ben Crump has expressed unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth surrounding Wells’ death, proclaiming, “We will persist, persist, persist” in the search for answers. He previously mentioned the significance of having the independent autopsy conducted by a pathologist with no connections to Mississippi law enforcement, which was partially funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Crump has also indicated that his legal team will pursue its own investigation into the matter.

Wells was last seen on Horn Island around 3 p.m. on 4 July, as reported by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. His family became concerned that evening when they acknowledged his absence but felt miscommunication with authorities delayed the search. Eventually, one of his friends had contacted the U.S. Coast Guard to report him missing, contributing to the overall confusion surrounding the events of that day.

Information from the sheriff’s office suggested that Wells may have opted to remain on the island, believing he would return to the mainland with others. However, discrepancies have arisen in the statements given by friends regarding his intentions. In a subsequent news conference, Crump asserted that accounts from a young woman reportedly involved suggest that Wells had in fact planned to return to the boat rather than stay behind.

There have also been contentious issues regarding Wells’ cellphone, which was reportedly left on a boat. Crump questioned the rationale behind a teenager leaving their phone behind if intending to stay on an isolated island. This concern has sparked further speculation about the events leading to his disappearance.

As local law enforcement continues to investigate, they have stated that friends of Wells have been cooperative. However, no immediate signs of foul play have been identified, and an official cause of death is still pending. The original autopsy performed on 7 July remains confidential, with Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd noting that it may take several weeks before results are made publicly available.

Nolan Wells, who would have turned 19 in August, played wide receiver for the football team at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he was well-regarded by peers. His family described him as a peacemaker with a strong desire to improve the lives of those around him. His father, Elmore Wonsley, remarked on the bright future ahead of his son, stating, “He was focused on what he wanted. He wanted to make life better for his family. He’s going to be really missed.”
